Jermaine Pennant: Liverpool have turned a corner and can still challenge for silverware
Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant has told NewBettingOffers.co.uk that despite his former team’s dip in form throughout October, they seem to have turned a corner with two clean sheets in a row and a win against Real Madrid in the Champions League.
Speaking to NewBettingOffers.co.uk, Pennant said: “I think Liverpool are overcoming their blip in the Premier League. It’s only a matter of time before things start to click between all the new players.
“Going back to basics has helped, with players like Andy Robertson back in the starting line-up, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Alexis MacAllister in midfield – the trio who won the league last season.
“They needed that to steady the ship and stop the bleeding, and it’s worked. Now they can build on those foundations and start reintroducing the new players into that system.
“Back-to-back clean sheets is a great sign for them, particularly with the latter game being a 1-0 win against Real Madrid on the Champions League stage, especially given Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr. have scored 26 goals between them this season.
“Liverpool look as though they’ve turned a corner, and things are starting to gel now between them.”
Mohamed Salah ‘drop off’ emphasised by high standards
Pennant rushed to defend Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who’s recently come under scrutiny for a ‘poor’ season so far, claiming that the Egyptian winger has set such high standards for himself that any drop in form will be emphasised.
“Mohamed Salah isn’t getting any younger,” he said. “Each game, each season will be wearing him down. The reason why people have been talking about his drop-off this season is because he’s set such high standards for himself for almost a decade now.
“It becomes far more noticeable, particularly given how prolific he was last season. They’re going through a transitional period at the moment, it’s not as though it’s the same team with the same style with Trent Alexander-Arnold behind him.
“He’s learning just as much as everyone else is with this new squad. He had a good game against Real Madrid and has scored two from his last two Premier League appearances; he’s finding a little bit of form.
“Hopefully he can build on that with the team, and they can truly kickstart the season and mount a challenge for the title.”
Ekitike and Isak can play together
Despite the constant noise surrounding Liverpool’s starting striker, Pennant reckons Arne Slot has the option to play both Ekitike and Isak at the same time.
“Hugo Ekitike deserves the starting spot at number nine at the moment, over Alexander Isak. He’s scored the most goals!
“Playing them both would be nice, I think there is a way that could work. Ekitike does tend to drift over to the left and cut in on his right and that would open up some space for Isak down the middle.
“He’s good with his feet so he can do that job. In that sense, there’s not much to differentiate him from Cody Gakpo in that position, so there’s always that option for Arne Slot.
“Once Isak is back to his best and fully fit, we know what he’s capable of. At Newcastle he faced teams that would challenge them front on and give them space, teams don’t play like that against Liverpool.
“Teams play a low block and that starves the strikers of space to do what they want. Liverpool need to find a way to create that space and get them scoring in the right areas.
“It will come good at some point, I’ve got no doubt about that. They’ve got some top-quality players and once everything is aligned I think they’ll be firing on all cylinders.”
