Gary Pallister: Man City’s resurgence will intimidate title challengers
Former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister has told NewBettingOffers.co.uk that he believes Manchester City’s resurgence will be striking fear in Arsenal and Liverpool.
Speaking to NewBettingOffers.co.uk, Pallister said: “I don’t think anybody would have foreseen Arsenal being top of the Premier League and favourites to win it at this moment in time.
“Liverpool have had their struggles recently and just think where they would be if they hadn’t scored all those last-minute winners in the first few weeks of the season.
“Everybody was talking about Arsenal bringing in a striker and they’ve done that with Viktor Gyökeres, but I’m not sure he’s a top-drawer No9 yet. I might be proven wrong, but right now I’m not convinced he’s in the top bracket of strikers in Europe.
“Manchester City are starting to pick up as well, which is always intimidating for everybody else because they are serial winners.
“It’s a tough one to call at the moment, and if Liverpool were to go and sign Marc Guehi in the January transfer window then that might change the landscape a bit, because their struggles have mainly been at the back.”
Arsenal are similar to some Man Utd teams I played in
Ex-Red Devils centre-back Pallister compared the current Arsenal team to the side he played in under Alex Ferguson in 1992, who went on to win the first Premier League.
“I feel like Arsenal are similar now to what Manchester United were in my time there in 1992,” said Pallister. “We came so close to winning the First Division in the 1991-92 season but just missed out to Leeds and I feel like Arsenal players are in that same sort of territory.
“We were getting accused of bottling it and not having the guts or determination to win the title; that’s exactly what they’re dealing with at the moment. You can use that as fuel to ignite your title charge, and I feel like that is what Arsenal are doing.
“Finishing as runners-up three years in a row has built the pressure on Mikel Arteta. He and his squad might just have the bit between their teeth more than the others, which could see them over the line this season.
“That said, if Liverpool were to go back in for Guehi in January and get him, then that could be a key moment in their favour in deciding where the title ends up this season.”
Leeds are the strongest of the promoted teams
Former Premier League defender Pallister feels Leeds are the strongest of the three newly-promoted teams.
“From what I’ve seen so far, Burnley are definitely going to struggle,” he said. “I know they’ve had some good early results, but I also think Sunderland could struggle as well. They were poor against Manchester United before the international break and have also already dropped three points against Burnley. I hope I’m wrong because I’d like to see both of them put up a fight and stay in the Premier League.
“Leeds are the team who might just have enough. In the games that I’ve seen them play, they just have a bit more nous than the other two promoted sides.
“They had a blip against Arsenal, but other than that they’ve put in some solid performances. They picked up valuable wins against Wolves and Everton, played well to draw with Newcastle and Bournemouth, and put up a really strong fight against Spurs.
“That said, it’s still going to be a tough task for them to stay up. If I had to choose one of them to avoid relegation this season, it’d be Leeds.”
Forest and Wolves in danger of relegation
Pallister also gave his thoughts on the relegation battle for those teams who are established in the Premier League, naming Nottingham Forest and Wolves as the two sides he thinks could be in danger.
“Wolves seem to be in a bit of turmoil at the moment,” Pallister said. “They lost Matheus Cunha in the summer, and he was a key player for them. Now they sit bottom of the Premier League and they can’t rely on him to win them games anymore.
“Things haven’t gone to plan at Nottingham Forest either this season. Their decision to sack Nuno Espírito Santo and bring in Ange Postecoglou was a strange one and it hasn’t really worked out. The fans seem to have lost faith already. It’s very turbulent at the moment and if it continues for another few weeks, it’d be no surprise if they changed the manager again.
“Away from the promoted sides, so far, I’m fearing more for Nottingham Forest and Wolves than any of the other teams towards the bottom of the table.”
