Here are a couple of strategies to consider when betting on Boxing:

The Heavy Favourite Hedge

One of my favourite boxing betting strategies focuses on heavyweight fights where the solid favourite has concussive power and is extremely hard to oppose. The first instinct with these fights is to simply place the entire stake on the favourite to win. However, I prefer to split my stake 50/50 between two options.

The first half of the stake goes on the favourite to win by KO, TKO, or Disqualification. Given the knockout power of the favourite, if they do win, it will most likely be by knockout. Stating the method of victory will always offer a bigger price than simply picking which fighter will win. The exact difference will depend on the knockout percentage of the fighter, but examples from my records include 1/5 vs 1/20, 4/11 vs 1/10, 4/6 vs 1/4, and 11/10 vs 1/2.

The second half of my stake goes on Fight to Go the Distance: NO. Clearly, if my bet on the favourite to win by KO, TKO, or Disqualification wins, this bet will also win. However, the real purpose of this bet is to limit the damage in the case of a shock result. The heavyweight division has experienced its share of upsets over the years, and when the favourite loses, they often get stopped. Mike Tyson vs Buster Douglas, Lennox Lewis vs Oliver McCall, Lennox Lewis vs Hasim Rahman, Anthony Joshua vs Andy Ruiz Jr, immediately spring to mind, but there are many more.

Oppose the Unbeaten Favourite

First things first, this is not a strategy to follow blindly. Anyone opposing Floyd Mayweather or Joe Calzaghe during their much-vaunted careers would have found themselves with a one-way ticket to the poor house. Nevertheless, there is something irresistibly appealing about an unbeaten record and, in my experience, such fighters can start at artificially short prices. For this strategy to produce a bet, we are looking for two things.

Firstly, does the unbeaten fighter’s record actually amount to much? A boxer may be 8 and 0, but if a look through their record reveals a list of past-their-prime has-beens/fighters with losing records/out-of-shape knockout fodder, the record probably doesn’t reveal much about their actual talent.

Secondly, the opponent has to have an appealing profile. A record of 12-3 may be off-putting against our 8-0 fighter, but if two of those losses came to subsequently highly ranked fighters and the third was a close points decision, the fighter with the defeats may have the better body of work. Many fighters rattle off a sequence of wins at the start of their career. Few end with an unbeaten record. Predicting the first defeat can offer the best value.
