Non Runner No Bet

"Non Runner no Bet” or “Non Runner Money back” as some bookmakers are now calling it, is a feature whereby if you place a bet on a horse and it doesn’t end up running in the race, then you get your money back. Royal Ascot 2024 Betting Tips

Next week promises to be some week on the sporting front. As if the wall-to-wall football provided by Euro 2024 wasn’t enough, we also have the small matter of 35 cracking racing contests from the Royal Ascot Festival to look forward to.

Kicking off on Tuesday and running through to Saturday, the Berkshire extravaganza offers a level of pomp and pageantry not seen at your average racing fixture – providing the perfect backdrop to an overload of Group Class action. The opening day, in particular, promises to be a cracker, but Day 3 stages the most famous event at the meeting, as the most talented stayers in the game lock horns in the Gold Cup.

Here, we look ahead to the 2024 edition of this historic event, highlighting the hot favourite and interesting outsiders, and picking out our best bets for the race.

The Favourite: Kyprios Back to Reclaim his Crown

With 85 Royal Ascot wins, Aidan O’Brien is now the most successful trainer in the long history of the meeting. He also tops the all-time Trainer’s Table in this event with an impressive eight victories. Bidding to bolster that record this time around is 2022 champ Kyprios.

Sired by the great Galileo, this tough and talented performer cut a swathe through the staying division in 2022 – winning six of six starts, including this race, the Goodwood Cup, Irish St. Leger, and Prix Du Cadran – looking every inch a horse who would dominate the stamina laden scene for years to come.

Things didn’t quite work out that way, with Kyprios succumbing to injury and missing 344 days following that Prix Du Cadran romp. Would he be the same on his return? Defeats in the 2023 Irish St. Leger and Long Distance Cup suggested perhaps not. However, 2024 has been much more like it, with two starts yielding as many wins, including in the Group 3 Saval Beg Stakes. At the peak of his powers, he’s comfortably the most talented performer in the field and the one they all have to beat at 4/5 with bet365.

Gregory Heads the Gosden Team

Famously landing three successive editions with the sensational Stradivarius, John Gosden took advantage of the absence of Kyprios last year when landing the prize with Courage Mon Ami. This year, Courage Mon Ami misses out through injury, but the Gosden’s still have a potent three-pronged attack in the shape of Gregory, Trawlerman, and Sweet William.

Yet to finish outside the first three in nine career starts, Sweet William seems likely to prove popular with each-way punters, whilst Trawlerman downed Kyprios in the Long Distance Cup here in October. Despite the claims of the aforementioned duo, Gregory is deemed the most likely to prevail at 6/1 with bet365. As one of only two four-year-olds in the field, he’s a good trends fit (seven of the last ten editions having fallen to a four-year-old), but he does need to find improvement for this first crack at 2m4f.

Don’t Rule out Willie Mullins

Having swooped to land one major flat staying prize, when sending out Absurde to land the 2023 Ebor, British and Irish Champion jumps trainer Willie Mullins has his sights set on another. Leading the Closutton Gold Cup assault is 2022 Triumph Hurdle winner Vauban.

No stranger to success at this meeting, having routed the field in the Copper Horse Handicap last season, Vauban subsequently bombed out when sent off as favourite for the Melbourne Cup. However, it is easy to forgive a runner a poor performance on the other side of the world, and a recent comeback second in the Yorkshire Cup should tee him up nicely for this.

Best of The Rest

Amongst those available at double-figure prices, Andrew Balding’s Coltrane immediately jumps out as a viable each-way contender - being one of only two course and distance winners in the field. That success came in the 2022 edition of the Ascot Stakes at this meeting, and he again showed a liking for this course and distance when second to Courage Mon Ami in the 2023 Gold Cup.

Dual Prix du Cadran winner Trueshan would look a big price at around the 33/1 mark if back to his best, but the eight-year-old has been some way below that peak in two outings so far this season. Prydwen is twice that price but at least arrives on an upward trajectory, whilst Caius Chorister has excellent form at 2m and isn’t out of it if coping with the additional distance.
