Who are Coral?

The early years of Coral would make for a decent rags-to-riches movie. Following the death of his father, Joseph Kagarlitski moved to England with his family in 1912. Keen to fit in, Joseph’s mother changed the family name to Coral, taking inspiration from The Coral Island novel she was reading at the time.

Overcoming crippled arms and run-ins with London gangsters, Joe Coral progressed from bookies runner to the man behind one of Britain’s biggest high-street bookmakers. Launching online as Coral Eurobet in 2000, Coral has only gone from strength to strength. In 2016, Coral merged with Ladbrokes to form LC Group PLC and is now part of the Entain Group.

Are Coral’s odds any good?

First things first, the bread and butter for many punters – the English Premier League. Here, Coral scored top marks. An average overround of 5.68% in the match result market compared favourably with the competition. For example, William Hill offered a poor 8%+ for several fixtures. Overall, Coral offered the joint-best price or outright best price on at least one result in nine of the ten games. That’s about as good as you will find from a single bookmaker.

Next, I looked at the horse racing ahead of a Monday evening fixture from Windsor – one of my favourite ways to start the punting week. Again, Coral excelled. From a snapshot of the markets taken an hour before the first race, Coral offered the outright or joint best price for 34 of the 56 runners (over 60%) competing across the seven races.

Is the Coral welcome offer good value?

Coral offers a great value Bet and Get Welcome Offer. Place a qualifying bet of just £5 or more at odds of 1/2 (1.50) or higher to get 4 x £5 free bets on any sportsbook market, 1x £5 free bet on any football bet builder, and 1 x £5 free horse racing bet builder, for a total of £30 in free bets.

The £30 value of the free bets is lower than that of some competitors, notably Betfred (£50) and Spreadex (£60). However, each of those deals comes with a £10 qualifying bet requirement. Coral, together with fellow Entain site Ladbrokes, offers one of the cheapest ways to get your hands on £30 in free bets.

Football Betting

The tight betting margins alone are enough to earn Coral a place on my list of the best football betting sites. However, there are many more selling points.

Head to the football section to find odds and markets from 38 nations. Lower-profile leagues offer decent depth; e.g. when checking out a Bolivian fixture (should the mood take you), you can expect to find over 40 markets.

For a game from a major league, such as the English Premier League, you can expect to find over 150 markets. All of the usual match result, handicap, goalscorer, cards, and corners are available, alongside more innovative options, such as the 5-, 10-, and 15-minute markets. Can’t find the bet you need? Many markets turn in-play once the game kicks off – including a trimmed-down Bet Builder, which you won’t find at every betting site. A selection of lower-profile leagues benefit from live streaming. Non-streaming games (most of them) feature handy stats boxes to help follow the action. When betting in-play on the Premier League, I appreciate Coral’s rapidly updating odds and cash-out facility – it comes in handy when bailing out of my latest Newcastle United punt (never back the team you support).

Horse Racing may be the sport that Coral does best. That said, I do have one small gripe. At Coral, you must opt in to the Best Odds Guaranteed offer. This only takes a couple of clicks, but is easy to miss and feels unnecessary – why would you not want the offer? With that off my chest, let’s move on to the positives.

As mentioned above, you won’t be disappointed with the Coral prices. The daily odds offer excellent value, while Coral are often among the first to market with ante-post prices for the big races.

Coral features the UK’s only free racehorse ownership club. Simply opt in to join the Coral Racing Club. The Club includes updates on the latest runners and the chance to win owner experiences, race tickets, yard visits, and more.

The Coral horse racing Bet Builder lets you combine options including winner, to finish placed, and winning distance. If you are looking for inspiration, all UK and Irish races come with free Racing Post verdicts, while the Naps and Stats section picks out the best bets of the day.

The excellent Racing Super Series has become part of my Saturday morning ritual – pick a horse to finish placed in each of the seven selected races to win a share of £10,000. Sports Betting

Away from the UK staples of racing and football, Coral offers odds and markets on over 35 sports and events. The major US sports are all covered in depth, as are popular sports like snooker, cricket, and boxing. For those with more niche tastes than this writer, TV specials, hurling, and netball also feature on the list.

In all honesty, I have never placed a bet on either hurling or netball in my long and fairly adventurous punting career. However, two sports I do regularly head to Coral for are tennis and snooker.

Coral earned a place on my list of best tennis betting sites, thanks to the extensive coverage, including the ATP, WTA, Challenger, and ITF Tours, and great value promos. Selective use of the enhanced tennis singles and accas can really add up.
