Do Extra Place Races Offer Good Value?
At first glance, extra place races appear to offer excellent value. What could be bad about getting paid out on an extra place in a race? But does this hold in practice?
To assess the value of an Extra Place race vs standard each way terms, we will use three hypothetical races. One with seven runners, one with eight, and one with 16. Each example race assumes a 100% book and a strategy of placing a £5 each way bet on every runner in the race.
Of course, 100% books are merely a dream and don’t exist in reality. However, the above analysis suggests that, like most bookmaker promotions, Extra Place races do offer added value to the punter. There is a reason why UK bettors flock to Extra Place races almost as frequently as they do to bad each way races.

Using Extra Place Races to Your Advantage
As with all forms of each-way betting, selecting the right horse is the most important factor in benefitting from Extra Place races. That topic is enough to fill another article, but in general, runners in the middle of the market tend to be the most valuable. Short-priced favourites are that much more likely to finish in the standard placed positions, while finding a rank outsider to finish in the first four or five is usually tricky. With that said, there are a couple of areas where Extra Place races can be particularly useful.
Back with the Bookie, Lay on the Exchange
Consider a 16-runner handicap where a bookmaker offers 6 places at 1/5 the odds, while the place-only exchange market pays out on the first four. The strategy here is to back the horse each way with the bookie and lay the same horse at a similar price in the win and place markets on the exchange to create a freeroll, as follows:
Extra Place Lucky 15
If you don’t like Lucky 15s, you won’t like this strategy. I, however, love Lucky 15s. The key thing with a Lucky 15 is getting all the legs to connect – one leg down costs you one single, three doubles, three trebles and a four-fold.
