Gary Pallister: Sunderland victory could prove very important for Amorim
Former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister has told NewBettingOffers.co.uk that he believes Manchester United’s win over Sunderland could be a big moment in Ruben Amorim’s tenure.
Speaking to NewBettingOffers.co.uk, Pallister said: “Manchester United’s 2-0 home win over Sunderland was a big one for Ruben Amorim. He was coming in for a lot of criticism and having to defend himself, so that was an important result.
“I hate to think what the headline would have been if they’d lost at home to Sunderland. The three home victories in the Premier League so far have been against two promoted teams in Sunderland and Burnley, and a Chelsea side who were down to 10 men after five minutes.
“It was a game they were expected to win, but they did things quite comfortably, especially in the first half. Going into an international break off the back of a win is never a bad thing so that makes it even more important.
“The critics won’t be silenced yet because there are bigger games to come for Manchester United, like the game at Anfield after the international break. They have to show they’re making strides to get better and closer to those top sides, but it’s hard to say that because they’ve been so inconsistent this season.
“In amongst some half-decent performances there have been some really bad ones. The pressure won’t begin to ease until they start making inroads against the top sides and look more of a force that they did last year.”
Mount could have a big season for United and make World Cup squad
Pallister believes Mason Mount could be a key player for United moving forward as he tries to prove his doubters wrong.
“Amorim has put a lot of trust in Mason Mount,” said Pallister. “I think he’s trying to repay that trust at the moment. He played really well against Sunderland and has put in a few good performances so far this season.
“Amorim left Matheus Cunha out of the side against Sunderland in order to play Mount, which was a big decision, and it says a lot about how much trust he has in him.
“He’s already missed a lot of football at United through injury, which is a bit of a concern. We’ve seen enough of him in the Premier League to know what he’s capable of, but we he hasn’t produced as much at United simply because of how much time he has spent out injured.
“He’s had a stop-start career at United but he’s a very talented player. He’s at the point now where he might even be trying to prove people wrong, because I think quite a few people had written him off already. The ball is in his court, he’s started really well and if he can keep fit then he could have a big season for United.”
Mount can make World Cup squad
Pallister believes Mount is capable of reclaiming a place in the England squad if he can stay injury free this season.
“I definitely think Mount can earn a place in the World Cup squad,” he said. “He’s got experience at international level. If he can find the form that earned him his place in the squad a few years ago then there’s no reason why he can’t return for the World Cup.
“Thomas Tuchel has worked with him before and may want him in his squad, but it’s down to Mount to prove that he’s back to his best on a consistent basis. If he can drag United up to a higher standard and help them become a better team, that won’t go unnoticed.
“There are a lot of players vying for the attacking midfield spots in that England squad, so he’ll have to raise his game to a really high level to earn his place ahead of the others.”
Maguire no longer fits in United’s best back three
The former United centre back doesn’t feel Harry Maguire would feature in Amorim’s first-choice back three, preferring Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro to the Englishman.
“When everyone is fully fit, I think Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro are United’s best back three,” said Pallister. “Luke Shaw has played well as the left-sided centre half, but I still prefer him at left back.
“I think Martinez gets straight back into the side when he’s fit. He’s exactly the kind of character United need in their team at the moment. If he’s fully fit and firing then he fits that left centre back slot perfectly.
“De Ligt has been good this season and I still think there’s more to come from Yoro. He hasn’t quite hit the levels he reached at the end of last season, but he’s still young and he’s learning the game. He’ll be one for the future, but the more minutes he can get under his belt now the better.”
