Stan Collymore: Kane will go down as one of Europe’s great strikers
Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has told NewBettingOffers.co.uk that he believes Harry Kane will go down in history as one of Europe’s great strikers, alongside the likes of Gerd Müller and Robert Lewandowski.
Speaking to NewBettingOffers.co.uk, Collymore said: “Harry Kane’s numbers are something else. He’s got 98 goals and 29 assists in 103 games for Bayern Munich, that’s just crazy. The Bundesliga is the same level as the Premier League, but he was still scoring at an amazing rate at Spurs.
“Kane isn’t the type of player that takes your breath away. He doesn’t ghost past three or four defenders and score a wonderful solo goal. He’s a steady eight out of 10 every game, but he’s got so many qualities. He holds the ball up, recycles it, gets it out to the wide players, and he’s a brilliant finisher. I think that’s why he gets overlooked a bit.
“He’ll go down in history in the same bracket as the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Gerd Müller. They’re the type of players who, if you desperately need a goal, you’d put your life on them finishing a chance if you give them the service. He will go down as one of Europe’s great strikers and that’s no mean feat.
“There have been times for England when his all-round performances have been questioned. But then we’ll get a corner or the ball will find its way into the box and he’ll be the one on the end of it, putting it in the back of the net. He’s always in the right place at the right time and that’s not just a knack or instinct, it’s a finely honed skill.
Kane must score World Cup winner to be in Ballon d’Or conversation
Collymore doesn’t believe that Kane’s goal scoring record is enough for him to be considered for the Ballon d’Or, suggesting he’d need to produce a spectacular winning goal in the World Cup final to be recognised as a contender for the award.
“I don’t think he should be in the conversation for the Ballon d’Or at the moment,” said Collymore. “He’s a sensational goalscorer, but to win the Ballon d’Or, I think you need to have something else, something special.
“You need to be able to win a game on your own, out of the blue with a moment of magic. You need to go beyond your team to drive them forward in big games. I think that’s why Rodri won it. He carried Manchester City quite a lot and was pivotal for Spain at the Euros. He turns up with game-winning moments as well, like his winner in the Champions League final.
“For Kane to be in the conversation I think he’d need to score two worldies for England in the semi-finals and final at the World Cup and win the tournament. He’s going to win most domestic trophies at Bayern and may well make it to the latter stages of the Champions League, but he’s got to go beyond that.
“It sounds odd, but he must do more than score a lot of goals. He needs a bit of magic, a big goal or two from nowhere. If he scores a brace to win a Champions League final and one of them is a screamer, then he might be considered.
Kane could return to Premier League with Crystal Palace or Brentford
Collymore isn’t ruling out a return to English football for Kane, suggesting he could come back to the Premier League towards the end of his career for a London club like Crystal Palace or Brentford.
“He’s a remarkable striker and he deserves all the plaudits he gets,” said Collymore. “However, for me, I really would have liked to see him play for a side consistently challenging for the Premier League title when he was in his prime.
“He could have broken a British transfer record and gone to a Liverpool or a Manchester City. What would he have been like then, and how good could he have been? That’s something we’ll never know.
“You’re always expected to score goals and win games at Bayern because they dominate German football pretty much every season. That said, his body of work at Spurs will be studied for many years and people will appreciate how well he did to have that goalscoring record at a club that only really challenged towards the very top of the table once or twice.
“I could see him coming back to the Premier League. I can see him either going to the Saudi Pro League for a year, or even the MLS, then coming back to the Premier League. If he comes back towards the end of his career, then I think it’ll be back in London at the likes of Crystal Palace or Brentford.
“If I were him, having put together an immense body of work in Europe at Spurs and Bayern, I’d probably look at playing a couple of years in the States. Go to Los Angeles or New York and enjoy a different scene with your family. Or, take the Saudi money for a year and secure another 75 million pounds.”
