Nigel Winterburn: Eze the ideal candidate to solve Arsenal’s attacking problems
Former Arsenal player Nigel Winterburn has told NewBettingOffers.co.uk that Eberechi Eze is the perfect solution to Arsenal’s weakness on the left-hand side, as he can compete with Gabriel Martinelli for that position as well as cover for captain Martin Ødegaard in the No10 role should he get injured.
The ex-Gunner discusses their attacking balance as well as the massive task manager Mikel Arteta has on his hands in trying to keep the fans onside.
Speaking to NewBettingOffers.co.uk, Winterburn said: “Players that can play on that left-hand side will always be talked about when thinking about potential Arsenal signings. Noni Madueke can play there but if Arsenal were to approach anyone else this window, it’d be someone in that position to make it competitive with Gabriel Martinelli.
“Everyone under the sun who plays left-wing has been linked with Arsenal! Eberechi Eze is a player I really like who could fill that role as well as play inside, too. When you look at Martin Ødegaard, Eze could easily fit into that position as well. That gives you two options.
“It may be the case that Arsenal need to sell a few players and get that wage bill down to bring someone like him in. If the fans could only have one more signing in this window, they’d all agree it’d be someone like Eze to fit into that left-wing role and potentially fill in for Ødegaard as well if he’s unfit.
“Ethan Nwaneri is developing into a top player and I see him taking over that No10 role eventually.”
This is a massive season for Arteta
Winterburn commented on the pressure Mikel Arteta is under to land silverware this season but remains faithful to the current Arsenal boss.
He added: “Whenever you don’t win a trophy for a period of time, there’ll always be fans who are outspoken about the manager having had his chance and that it may be time for a change. Mikel Arteta has developed the squad brilliantly and he knows the pressure and what the fans are craving.
“The fans want a trophy. When the team wins something, if there’s some quality and belief in the squad it makes getting the next one easier. The next one is always hard, and they somehow need to find a way of getting over the line.
“This season is massive for the team and a huge season for Arteta, as they won the FA Cup in his first season and nothing since. He’s got to keep the fans onside and bring home some silverware this season.
“They’ve got a brilliant squad so now is the time to deliver, but there are four or five other teams in the Premier League who will be thinking the same.”
Saka among PFA Player of the Year candidates
Winterburn waxed lyrical about Arsenal talisman Bukayo Saka, citing that he will be in with a good chance of picking up PFA Player of the Year, however, there is plenty of new and existing talent that will all be in with a shout this season.
“Bukayo Saka is capable of winning PFA Player of the Year,” he said. “I love watching him play. If you look through the players in the Premier League, though, there are some incredibly talented players to contend with. Similarly, there have been plenty of new signings who we’re waiting to see how they gel with their new teams and how they get on.
“You’d be hard-pressed to pick five or six guaranteed players that’ll be crowned PFA Player of the Year, because there are a lot of players hovering around that could have a huge influence on their teams this season.
“When you’re part of a team it’s always about getting all the combinations right. It doesn’t matter how many chances you’re getting, if you’re leaking goals at the other end. We all like to see goals but you need to get the other parts right.
“Saka is super talented and has played at a very high level since he came into the team which has seriously impressed me. He came in at left-back, into left midfield and now into right-wing. He always delivers to a high standard and that’s what impresses me about him. His level of performance is so high and reflects his ability.”
