Lee Sharpe: Arsenal will make changes if Arteta does not deliver the league this season
Former Premier League winger Lee Sharpe has told NewBettingOffers.co.uk that he believes Arsenal’s board will likely make changes if Mikel Arteta cannot get his men over the line this season and win the Premier League.
Speaking to NewBettingOffers.co.uk, Sharpe said: “Everyone has so much respect for Mikel Arteta, with where Arsenal are now and where he’s taken them from, but how many chances will he get at winning the Premier League? You almost want him to win it because of the hard work and dedication he puts into the game and to Arsenal as a club.
“He should be rewarded at some point but if it doesn’t happen, then maybe it wasn’t meant to be and it could be time for a change of the guard at Arsenal. The majority of fans would be sad to see the back of him because of what he’s built over the past few years.
“He’s created a really good team, but if he can’t get it over the line this season questions will be asked. Changes will be made because of how long he’s been there and the chances he’s been given in the last few years.”
Man City know how to win a Premier League, Arsenal don’t
Sharpe commented on Manchester City’s recent run of form, citing that it is going to be hard to keep Pep Guardiola’s men at bay if Arsenal don’t pull away from them in the next couple of months.
“Although Arsenal are top of the Premier League at the moment, you wouldn’t be scared to say that they might not get it over the line again this season,” he said. “Manchester City have been extremely strong recently and they’re only two points behind at the moment.
“City look like they’re getting stronger game by game and they’ve been in this position so many times. They’ve got the badge, they’ve got the t-shirt, they know how to win a Premier League, and you can’t say that about Arsenal. That experience will be invaluable over the next few months which everyone knows is a pivotal time in the season.
“This is the biggest question mark over Arsenal at the moment, with the injuries they’ve got to some of their best players, do they have the depth to keep their title hopes alive as well as balancing their success in the Champions League? It’s a testing time and this Christmas period will define their season.
“The games come thick and fast and if it’s really close by the end of January and the middle of February, it’ll be really difficult to keep Man City quiet in their charge.”
Chelsea and Villa make my top four
Although mentioning that Manchester United would make it in his top four predictions, their recent results have made room for Chelsea and Aston Villa instead.
“The top two spots in the Premier League will be given to Manchester City and Arsenal,” he said. “On recent form, it’ll be Aston Villa who’ll end up occupying third. Their performance against Arsenal was one of the best games I’ve watched them play, they were superb.
“The way they moved the ball around against that Arsenal side was fantastic and ultimately got a really good result. They started the season so poorly but given the run they’re on and the way they’ve come back strongly to do what they’ve done has been incredible and is a testament to the manager and the players.
“Questions will be asked around their squad depth in this busy period, particularly if they suffer any injuries. Chelsea would be my pick for fourth, and I would’ve gone for Manchester United had their last few results been a little different.
“Chelsea, Villa and United are all susceptible to a slip up so it’ll be up to how consistent they can be in the coming months which’ll decide it. For now, I think it’ll be Chelsea and Villa that make that top four.”
