Kentucky Derby Betting Preview
Saturday is a cracking day for horse racing enthusiasts all over the globe, although the prestige of the Kentucky Derby ensures that there will be plenty of eyes Stateside.
This is one of the most storied and lucrative horse races on the planet; the winner will pocket $3.1 million (£2.3 million) for their connections.
The ten-furlong race is described as the ‘fastest two minutes in sport’, and race fans will attend the Churchill Downs venue in their legions on Derby Day – more than 156,000 were at trackside last year. For context, that’s roughly three times the attendance of Gold Cup Friday at the Cheltenham Festival.
The 2025 edition of the Kentucky Derby is shaping up to be a humdinger, too. Two horses, Journalism and Sovereignty, are battling it out to head the betting market, but with some rain and thunderstorms forecast for Churchill Downs, conditions could well be muddy and slow – that will bring plenty of others into the equation.
Kentucky Derby Betting Favourites
In the past 24 editions of the Kentucky Derby since the turn of the new millennium, 12 of the winners have had a high draw – breaking from stall 13 or even closer to the rail. That comes as no surprise given that reaching the inside track is key to victory in many fast-paced races on the Flat.
Journalism, the 3/1 betting favourite with William Hill, has been drawn in stall eight. That’s not to say he won’t win, but each of his four victories – which include the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby – have come when well-drawn in fast conditions.
Perhaps Sovereignty, drawn in stall 18, warrants more respect at 6/1; again, William Hill are on top price duty. Already a course winner at Churchill Downs, there’s plenty of appeal – if you can overlook a second-place finish last time out as an 11/8 favourite at the Florida Derby.
The next best in the market is Luxor Café, a 9/1 chance with Bet365. But how well will the Japanese horse travel? Jockey Joao Moreira is also yet to win the Kentucky Derby, so perhaps there’s scope to look further afield for our bets.
Kentucky Derby Betting Tips
The relative inexperience of Journalism’s trainer and jockey team at the Kentucky Derby are notable, as are the fact that the horse has never raced outside of California. Add into the mix a somewhat sticky draw in stall eight, and the favourite can perhaps be swerved with confidence.
A stronger case can be made for both Sandman and Sovereignty, who both have plum draws – in 17 and 18 respectively – and who come into the race backed by strong form in the Arkansas Derby and Florida Derby… those have proven to be excellent pointer races for the Kentucky Derby.
Maybe it’s Grande that offers the best of the each way value at 25/1 with Bet365 and William Hill.
His trainer, Todd Pletcher, has already won the Kentucky Derby twice, while jockey John Velazquez is one of the most decorated in American racing – only three riders have won this race more times than him.
Grande is a progressive type that will sit comfortably in the pack and wait patiently for a tap from the experienced Velazquez, and if conditions are on the slow side at Churchill Downs then that style and pacing could well come up trumps.
He’s inexperienced at Grade 1 level, but the words of Pletcher allow backers to be bullish: “I think [Grande] is on the improve and he is under the radar a little bit,” he said. “People who really look at all the speed figures and all of those kinds of things, it shows that he fits.”
The three-year-old has won two of his three starts, with his sole defeat coming at the hooves of Rodriguez, who – despite being drawn in stall four – would otherwise fit the bill as a strong Kentucky Derby contender at 16/1 with Betfred.
Even casual racing fans may have heard the name of his trainer, Bob Baffert, who is looking to become the first seven-time winner of the race. Mike Smith, who was aboard Justify in his amazing Triple Crown season of 2018, has been booked for the ride.
Kentucky Derby Best Bets
It’s Sovereignty and Sandman that arguably stand out as the most likely winners of the 2025 Kentucky Derby; those seeking a win-only punt may be best served taking the former.
Sovereignty and Sandman shape as the best value exacta/forecast too, with Rodriguez adding intriguing value to complete the trifecta/tricast.
