1000 Guineas & 2000 Guineas Betting Previews

The 2025 flat season has been ticking along for other a month now, but this weekend sees the action locate top gear for the opening Classics of the 2025 campaign. As ever, Newmarket sets the stage for Guineas weekend, as the cream of the three year old milers do battle for a place in the history books.

As ever, the fields for the 1000 and 2000 Guineas are crammed with potential storylines, with the potential for the bursting of bubbles and the possibility of relatively unheralded stars exploding onto the scene. But what, we hear you ask, are the best bets for the cracking 1m double bill? Here we take a look at each race in turn, and pick out our number one win selection and top each way bet in each race.

Betfred 2000 Guineas – Saturday 3:35 pm

The head of the 2000 Guineas has presented a changing picture over the early months of the year. Aidan O’Brien’s the Lion In Winter initially headed the betting before the announcement came that he wouldn’t make it in time Stablemate Twain replaced him, only to in turn be booted off top spot following the electric display from Field Of Gold in the Craven Stakes.

In the end, Twain doesn’t make the line-up either, leaving Expanded as the sole entry from the yard of the most successful trainer in Guineas history. A rock solid second in the Dewhurst Stakes on only his second start, he boasts plenty of potential. However, it would be disappointing to see this race fall to the colt deemed only third best of the O’Brien runners at the turn of the year.

The Godolphin picture is also a little unclear. With Shadow Of Light boasting two Group 1 wins, including one at this track, and Ruling Court having “only” a Listed class success to his name, William Buick would surely opt to ride the former, wouldn’t he. Apparently not. That decision to ride Ruling Court may be a tip in itself, but with the horse trading at a 8/1 earlier in the week, taking the current 4/1 makes limited appeal for a horse who finished behind 20/1 chance Wimbledon Hawkeye last season.

Scorthy Champ is the only other runner available at a single figure price, but being by speed influence Mehmas, there must be a slight doubt in the stamina department.

All of which leads us to the slightly uninspiring conclusion that market leader Field Of Gold is the best win bet in this years 2000 Guineas. The fact that Juddmonte have taken out both Jonquil and Cosmic Year to rely solely on this years Craven Stakes screams confidence and, for our money, that victory was comfortably the best performance posted by any of the runners in this years field. John Gosden has yet to claim the 2000 Guineas, but we like his chances of doing so in 2025.

Green Impact is probably the sensible choice of those available at a double figure price. Twice mastering the talented Delacroix last season and hailing from the excellent Jessica Harrington operation, we wouldn’t put anyone off at a double figure price.

However, if there is a horse flying completely under the radar, we suspect it may be the Saeed Bin Suroor trained Tornado Alert. Raced only twice in 2024, he showed his inexperience on debut, but benefitted for the step up to a mile when scoring nicely at Newcastle next time. Sire Too Darn Hot scored in Group 1 company over this trip, whilst half sister Just Fine also scored at the highest level. At 66/1 with bet365, we have talked ourselves into an each way investment.

Betfred 1000 Guineas – Sunday 3:35 pm

Moving onto the fillies event, we have a red hot favourite at the head of the market, with the Charlie Appleby runner Desert Flower no bigger than Even Money. Four from four in her juvenile campaign and proven over the course and distance, she is tough to fault. However, she is yet to appear this season, meaning we don’t yet know how well she has developed from two to three. In a race which has fallen to the market leader only once in the last decade, that is enough for us to look elsewhere.

Of the others towards the head of the market, we suspect that we haven’t seen the best of Red Letter yet. The Ger Lyons filly looked a little unlucky when only fourth in the Moyglare Stud Stakes, but not so much so that she would have beaten the winner Lake Victoria with a clear run.

It is Lake Victoria who surely represents the best value of the fancied contenders. Only second in the betting, she is 2lbs clear of the field on official ratings and could scarcely have done anymore to advertise her claims in 2024. Ending the season with a perfect five from five record, including a trio of Group 1 events, the daughter of Frankel is one of only three distance winners in the field, having claimed the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf at Del Mar. Impeccably bred, unbeaten, and with the excellent Ryan Moore in the saddle, she looks the most likely winner to our eyes.

Chantilly Lace, Flight, and Hey Moo all merit each way consideration if taking their place in the final field. However, we will follow a similar angle to the 2000 Guineas, and side with the Saeed bin Surroor-trained Elwateen. By super sire Dubawi, and oy of the Group 1 winning mare Tawkeel, this one makes plenty of appeal on paper, and delivered on that potential when comfortably winning the only start of her juvenile season. Unusually, for a Saeed bin Surroor runner, she will carry the famous Shadwell silks, rather than those of Godolphin, but in a race which has witnessed 14/1, 16/1, 28/1, and 66/1 winners in the past seven years, she is appealing priced to at least hit the frame.
