Betting Strategies for Jumps Racing

Betting on Horse Racing

The national hunt racing calendar is filled with some huge events, including the Cheltenham Festival and the Aintree Grand National. Fans from all over the UK look forward to these events for months before they actually take place, and with horses coming back year after year and trying their luck on the biggest stage of all, fans feel a genuine connection with the runners.

When you begin betting on jumps racing you will grow to love the animals that are taking part and the people behind them. From a betting perspective, you can use this to your advantage to give yourself an edge over the bookmakers and it is certainly something to consider. There are many strategies and things to note when it comes to jump racing and if you are looking for something to point you in the right direction then here are just a couple of areas you can look at when you are trying to find winners.

The Going is Vitally Important in Jumps Racing

The jumps season begins in the autumn, runs through the winter and ends in the spring. When meetings are taking place we will have a variety of different weather and this means the going will change depending on what happens. We could begin with good ground after a nice autumn, have bottomless heavy ground in the winter after rain and snow and end with more good ground as the sunshine reappears for the spring.

When you are looking at jumps racing it is vital to know and understand the going, and also which horses are capable of running on it and which will hate it. A piece of form on heavy ground is no good if the horse is now running on spring ground that has been described as good. You may need to go back 12 months or maybe more, but try and find pieces of form on similar ground to what the horse is about to run on, although old this can be trusted and used more than recent form on completely different ground.

Sometimes during the jumps season you will see horses appear to spring a surprise and win a race when their most recent form shows they have no chance of winning. If you see results like this you should always look into them after the event. More than likely the ground will have had something to do with the change of form, so always ensure this is something you look at and consider before a race.

Get to Know the Best Trainers, Especially at Big Meetings

When we get around to the big meetings you will usually see that the big trainers come to the fore. These are yards with many good horses that have been prepping everything right for the moment that is about to happen. With state of the art facilities and a huge number of staff, when the best go against the best it is usually always the big guns that come out on top.

The teams behind the big trainers are what makes them special and helps them to stand out from the crowd. While they do of course need good horses to win big races, it is the tiny details that separate the very best at the top and these details are found in the facilities and the staff.

If you are looking at something like the Aintree Grand National or the Cheltenham Festival then look out for the big trainers and the horses they are sending there. These horses will have been trained to the minute for the race in hand by their master handler, but they will have also received nothing but the best care and attention in top class facilities in the build up to the race. If two great horses go head to head, with two great jockeys on board, then it is these subtle differences that could count on the day and be the difference between winning and losing.

On any day of the week, big trainers will usually step up and come to the fore, but when it comes to a big festival they are worth following even more.
