What is Baller League?

If you have ever wondered what would happen if the worlds of football, entertainment and social media influencers were to collide, we may now have our answer. Exploding onto British shores in the spring of 2025, Baller League has wasted little time making a huge splash.

Offering rapid-fire entertainment, star names, a platform for fringe footballing talent, and a clutch of rather unusual rules; Baller League is here to light up your Monday evenings with goal-laden action.

But what’s it all about? A perfectly reasonable question for many, considering the first Baller League fixtures only took place on March 24 2025. Let’s take a closer look.

Born in an Abandoned Plane Hanger

Baller League was founded in Germany in 2023 by entrepreneur Felix Starck and former German internationals Mats Hummels and Lukas Podolski. With games taking place in the unlikely location of an abandoned plane hanger, this fast and furious form of the beautiful game soon became a smash hit with fans. Having proven itself in Germany, the Baller League was ready for export.

2025 saw the format move into the UK and US markets, with YouTube sensation KSI stepping in as president of the UK league and IShowSpeed fronting the US operation.

A Six-A-Side League, But Not as You Know It

Running under the tagline “A New Era of Football”, Baller League offers a take on the game which differs markedly from your standard Premier League fare.

All games are six vs six affairs, played over two 15-minute halves. Squads consist of 12 players, with rolling substitutes in operation throughout. Each week, a manager may include up to two Wild Card players in the squad - players who, in theory, could be absolutely anyone. Nothing “too” unusual so far, but things begin to become a little strange when we come to the area of corner kicks.

Three Corners = Penalty Kick

There are no corner kicks in the Baller League. Instead, if the ball goes behind off a defensive player on three occasions, the attacking team is awarded a penalty kick…but not your standard penalty kick.

Baller League channels the golden era of MLS in the USA with its interpretation of a penalty kick. When awarded a penalty, the attacking player takes the ball and heads towards goal from the halfway line – free to shoot when he pleases or attempt to round the keeper if he wishes. The only rule here is that if he fails with his first shot, he may not attempt to score from the rebound.

Three Minutes of Chaos

With the exception of the corner system and unlimited substitutions, Baller League fixtures play out much like a standard six-a-side match. However, that all changes in the final three minutes of each half, when chaos descends on the indoor pitch.

With three minutes to go at the end of each half, a randomly activated Gamechanger rule change kicks into gear. At the end of the first half, this may be one of the following:

  • The Line - Goals scored from behind the offside line (roughly half the distance between the goal line and the halfway line) count double
  • 3 vs 3 - The game is reduced to 3 vs 3 with a 30-second shot clock – fail to shoot in that time and possession is handed over to the opposition
  • +1 - The three minutes begin at 1 vs 1, increasing to 2 vs 2 when a goal is scored, 3 vs 3 following the next goal, and so on.

At the end of the second half, fans can look forward to one of:

  • 1 vs 1 - 1 v 1 throughout, but players may only shoot from inside their own half, keepers can’t use their hands, and a 15-second shot clock is in play
  • Fast Forward - Once past the halfway line, the ball must move forward. Any backwards move concedes possession to the opposition
  • Fairplay - Any foul, no matter how innocuous, results in a straight red card

Thrown in a post-game Last Man Standing shootout, which offers a potential bonus point, and any resemblance to “normal” football has long since gone out of the window.

Baller League Format

Twelve teams make up the Baller League, with back-to-back fixtures at the Copper Box Arena every Monday evening during the season. Each side plays every other side once, resulting in 11 games for each Baller League outfit – three points for a win, one point for a draw, plus potential bonus points.

At the end of the regular season, the top four sides in the standings progress to the playoffs, consisting of two semi-finals and a final. The 2025 final takes place on June 11 at the Copper Box Arena.

The Teams

So, that’s the format and how the games play out, but who are the players involved? Unless you are particularly well-acquainted with the futsal scene or former fringe players at professional clubs, you may not be familiar with many of the players on show – ex-Premier League stars Marvin Sordell, Ciaran Clark, and Bakary Sako are just about the biggest names on show.

Those names get significantly bigger when we turn to the team managers involved. The men and women in the hot seats include three members of the Arsenal “Invincibles”, Lioness Chloe Kelly, legendary England centre-forwards, rap star Dave, social media sensations, and more…

Similarities/Differences with the King’s League

Baller League may be an entirely new concept to many UK fans. However, it isn’t the first innovative football league to emerge in recent years.

2022 saw the birth of the King’s League in Spain. With four-time Champions League winner Gerard Pique at the helm, the King’s League has proven a smash hit in its homeland and has much in common with the Baller League. However, there are also a few key differences.

Baller League vs King’s League: Similarities

  • Both leagues feature 12 teams
  • Both follow the same format, i.e. teams play every other side once before a playoff stage determines a champion
  • Both leagues use the 1990s MLS/ice hockey-style penalty system
  • Both leagues offer two Wild Card spots – known as Guest Stars in the King’s League

Baller League vs King’s League: Differences

  • Baller League is 6 vs 6 whereas King’s League is 7 vs 7
  • Baller League games last for 30 minutes (two 15-minute halves. King’s League games last for 40 minutes (two 20-minute halves)
  • There are no draws in the King’s League. If the teams are level after 40-minutes, the game progresses to a shootout
  • The King’s League features corner kicks
  • The King’s League also contains chaotic elements. However, in the King’s League, each team randomly selects a secret weapon card before kickoff. They may activate the power of this card at any time between half-time and the 38th minute. Secret weapon cards include all goals counting double for four minutes, removing an opposing player for four minutes, automatic penalty kick, and Star Player goal counts double.

Where Can I Watch Baller League

All Baller League fixtures are screened live on Sky Sports on Monday evenings. Alternatively, you can tune in live via Twitch or the Baller League YouTube channel.
