What Is Ante-Post Betting?

For many UK punters, the focus is often on the next event – the next horse race, the Premier League fixture list, or the big fight at the weekend. Nothing wrong with that; the consistent stream of excellent action is one of the perks of being a sports and betting fan in the UK.
However, in sports betting, it is not all about what happens in the next few days, hours, or minutes. With the calendar mapped out well in advance and following a set pattern year after year, we can look to the punting horizon for longer-term bets. Keen to satisfy demand, our good friends the bookmakers price up major races and sporting events weeks or months in advance.
In punting parlance, placing a bet well in advance of an event is known as ante-post betting. Particularly popular with horse racing punters, ante-post betting extends across a whole range of sports. Here, we take a closer look at what it's all about, including how it works, ante-post benefits, and potential downsides.
Why Is It Called Ante-Post Betting?

First things first – why is it called ante-post betting? To learn the origins of this term, we need to delve into horse racing history and have a brief refresher on ancient Latin.
The “post” part of the term refers to an actual post which was driven into the ground at British racecourses in the 19th century. Punters and bookmakers gathered around this post to place bets on the day of the race.
"Ante", meanwhile, means “before” in Latin. As such, an ante-post bet referred to a wager placed before punters and bookies congregated at the betting post, i.e. before the day of the race. Much has changed over the years; punters no longer gather around a single large post for one thing, but the term ante-post lives on.
What Counts as an Ante-Post Bet in the 21st Century?

Fast forward to the 2020s and ante-post betting remains most closely associated with horse racing. These days, an ante-post bet refers to any bet placed before the final declarations are made.
In British racing, final declarations are generally made 48 hours before the day of the race. Any bets placed before this time are classed as ante-post bets and are subject to ante-post rules. Bets placed after this time are subject to standard betting rules. But what’s the difference?
Ante-Post Bets vs Standard Bets: The Non-Runner Pitfall

The main difference between standard bets and ante-post bets is how they treat non-runners.
If you place a bet after final declarations, you will get your money back if your horse is a non-runner.
The bookmakers aren’t so generous when it comes to ante-post bets. If you place an ante-post bet and your horse doesn’t line up on the day, for whatever reason, you lose your stake. This is frustrating enough for single bets. For accumulator betting, an ante-post non-runner can be just as angst-inducing as getting it all wrong when you have one leg left.
As with many rules, there is an exception to the ante-post treatment of non-runners. Most of the time, you won’t get your ante-post stake back if your horse is declared a non-runner. However, if the ante-post market is labelled Non-Runner No Bet (NRNB) or Non-Runner Money Back (NRMB), you will receive a full refund if your horse does not take part in the race. Bookmakers traditionally offer the NRNB concession in the lead-up to major events such as the Cheltenham Festival, Grand National, and Royal Ascot.
Ante-Post Betting Benefits: Bigger Prices and Each-Way Terms

Given the differing rules surrounding non-runners, you might wonder why punters bother with ante-post bets. However, there are a couple of notable benefits:
Bigger Prices
This is the number one reason that ante-post betting remains so popular with racing punters. If you bet early, you can often beat the starting price by a considerable margin.
To use a real-world example, Lambourn caught the eye of many when finishing well for second in the key Ballysax Stakes Derby trial in 2025. Available to back at 25/1 for Epsom immediately after that race, he started at 13/2 and duly won. For many, this prospect of getting 25/1 about a 13/2 shot outweighs the downside of losing your stake if the horse doesn’t run.
There is a small caveat; the Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG) promotion does not apply to ante-post bets. So, had Lambourn drifted to 50/1 on the day of the Derby, those who backed him at 25/1 ante-post would be stuck with the shorter price. However, such a spectacular drift would likely have been triggered by a worrying loss of form, making BOG the least of your concerns.
While the lack of BOG can be perceived as a negative, there is a positive relating to Rule 4 deductions. Unlike standard bets, where returns may be affected if a horse is withdrawn after you place your bet, Rule 4 deductions generally do not apply to ante-post bets.
Advantageous Each-Way Terms
When you place an each-way ante-post bet, you lock in not only the price, but also the each-way terms at the time. Ante-post markets tend to offer either 1/5 the odds 1-2-3 or 1/4 the odds 1-2-3-4. Considering most ante-post markets list more runners than the maximum field permits, this is no more than fair. However, things can turn to your advantage.
One example that springs to mind is the 2020 edition of the Queen Mother Champion Chase. The Tom George-trained Bun Doran was never a leading contender that year, but he did at least have the race as his stated aim. Earlier in the year, he was available to back at 66/1 and bigger at 1/5 the odds 1-2-3. On the day, he started at odds of 33/1 in a five-runner field, resulting in each-way terms of 1/4 the odds 1-2.
In the end, Bun Doran ran an excellent race to finish third. This represented a case of "close but no cigar" for those who backed him on the day. However, those holding on to an ante-post ticket collected on the each-way part of the bet.
When To Use Ante-Post Betting

The basic thinking behind whether to place an ante-post bet is the same as for any bet - do you believe the odds underestimate the horse's chance of winning? That said, there are times which may trigger your ante-post radar:
- Spotted something others haven’t - Impressed with a horse's performance in a trial while others seem nonplussed? This could be the time to react swiftly. If you have genuinely spotted something, the market is sure to react in time.
- Multiple entries - This really comes into play when NRNB is in effect ahead of the Cheltenham Festival. Convinced that a Dan Skelton star has been laid out for one of the handicaps, but you aren’t sure which one? With NRNB in play, you can back the horse for every race in which it holds an entry. You will get your stake back for the races it doesn’t run in and most likely have a good price for the race in which it does line up.
- If you expect a field to cut up - This goes back to our Bun Doran example. When considering an ante-post bet, look back at the recent field sizes for the race in question. Racing is a sport of trends – if a race has attracted only a small field in recent years, there’s a fair chance that it may do so again. If you fancy a horse for such a race and have a strong suspicion it will run, an each-way ante-post bet may put you in a favourable position on the day.
Ante-Post Betting in Other Sports
Born in horse racing, ante-post betting remains most associated with the sport of kings. That said, you can place long-term bets on almost every sport, whether that be Jannik Sinner to win Wimbledon, the Seattle Seahawks to win the Super Bowl, or Newcastle United to win the Premier League at the start of the season. Ante-post betting in sports other than horse racing is often referred to as futures betting or simply long-term betting.
