Premier League Season Preview 2020/21
It doesn’t seem too long ago that the Premier League season of 2019/20 was coming to an end. This weekend, the new season begins.
We will have a minimum of 1 month where games will be played behind closed doors. Any attendances that come after that will be restricted and almost certainly be home fans only. It is going to be a very different season off the field of play, but let’s hope it brings the same level of excitement on the field as we are used to.
Here is a run down of the battles at the top of the table.
Premier League Title Race
It would be a surprise to see this as anything other than a two-horse race between Liverpool and Manchester City. Despite Liverpool winning last season with ease, the bookmakers have made Manchester City odds on favourites to get their title back.
This is somewhat of a surprise, and certainly means that the value is with Liverpool. There is little to choose between them, City probably have the edge in terms of quality but Liverpool are the better overall team, and have great harmony in the squad, they fight for each other.
Neither team have made huge changes over the summer that will transform their fortunes, and for that reason alongside the prices on offer, we have to side with Liverpool.
This team has been built to last and challenge for the league title for a number of years, they are our pick to win number two here.
Who Gets in the Top Four?
If you assume that the first and second positions will be taken by Liverpool and Manchester City in either order, that leaves two spaces for the top four.
Manchester United looked to be moving in the right direction at the end of last season, Chelsea have spent big this summer and a young Arsenal team had the boost of winning the FA Cup in August. Only Tottenham appear to be standing still at the moment.
So, if you discount Tottenham, that leaves any two from three to get in the top four.
The difference between the three teams is that Arsenal are earlier in their journey than Chelsea or Manchester United. They are younger and have another couple of years to learn before they get to the position that United and Chelsea are in at the start of this season.
They have gone through their changes, given youth the opportunity to shine and are now looking towards a regular place in the top four and eventually challenging the top two.
It may not be unique, but there is a gap between the top two and the rest of the table, and we could also see Manchester United and Chelsea create another gap between them and the remainder this season.
