Euro 2024 Round of 16 Acca Bet
The Group stages at Euro 2024 certainly delivered on the entertainment front (England excluded). There were few surprises in the top half of the draw, with Germany, Spain, and England topping their sections as expected. However, it was a different story in the bottom half, with Austria pipping France and the Netherlands in Group D and Romania improbably topping Group E.
All of which has resulted in Germany, France, Spain, and Portugal ending up in the same half of the draw – leaving England with an “easy” route to the final and ultimate glory. Or so the theory goes...on current form, we will just be happy to see the Three Lions get past Slovakia. With eight cracking contests in store, here, we pick out our best bets for the first knockout stage.
England vs Slovakia – Sunday 5pm
The less said about the England attack, the better, but they have at least been solid at the back – conceding only once in 270 minutes of football. In allowing Serbia two shots inside the area and Slovenia only one, those games were complete shutouts. The Danes were more productive but still only managed to score via a shot from range.
Slovakia, in contrast, are allowing an average of eight shots inside the box. That’s a significant edge in England’s favour and, in the hope that Gareth Southgate saw what the rest of the world did in the closing stages against Slovenia, we expect to see Kobi Mainoo, and one or both of Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon to start. That improvement in ball retention and direct threat should be too much for Slovakia.

France vs Belgium - Monday 5pm
Entering the tournament vying for favouritism with England, it’s fair to say France are yet to catch fire – finishing second in Group D following a win over Austria and uninspiring draws with the Netherlands and Poland. It was a similar story for Belgium, who were unlucky to lose against Slovakia, relatively impressive when beating Romania, and woeful in a final goalless draw with Ukraine.
There is little between the sides on the Group Stage xG stats; France's average for and against figures standing at 1.85 and 0.85, compared to the 1.55 and 0.85 of Belgium. However, particularly in the case of Belgium, we suspect those defensive numbers don’t tell the whole story, with Belgium’s opponents failing to make the most of several promising positions. From the French point of view, the fact that they conceded 10 shots inside the area to the previously awful Poland has to be a concern. France deserve their status as favourites, but the best bet is to side with goals.

Romania vs Netherlands – Tuesday 5pm
Romania provided the most surprising result of the Group stage when topping Group E, whilst the Netherlands had to settle for third behind Austria and France in Group D. An impressively organised defence has been the key to Romania’s success, with the underdogs averaging an xG of just over one goal against across their three group games, despite being starved of possession for long periods.
Ultimately, the Dutch should have enough quality to get the job done, having created plenty of chances against Austria and Poland. However, they looked notably vulnerable to pacey counterattacks in that 3-2 loss to Austria, which could spell trouble against a Romanian side likely to target rapid attacks on the break. Whether that will be enough to cause an upset, we aren’t so sure, but we do like Romania’s chances of getting on the scoresheet.

Austria vs Turkey – Tuesday 8pm
A fascinating clash rounds off the Last 16 as the supremely well-organised Austrians play one of the most enigmatic sides left in the tournament. Will the Austrian high press or Turkey’s explosive moments of brilliance come out on top?
Lightning up the Group phase with a selection of fine goals, Turkey have been good going forward, but have looked far from watertight at the back, often appearing on the verge of capitulation - we don’t like their chances of coping with the constant harassment of the Ralf Rangnick system. However, the Austrian high line will always leave them susceptible, particularly against a side whose midfield and forward players are in fine form. We fancy the best may be saved until last and wouldn’t be surprised to see this one go goal crazy.
