Doncaster Lincoln Meeting - Best Bets
Following the conclusion of the Cheltenham Festival, it is back to the flat for this week’s horse racing highlight, as the Yorkshire track of Doncaster serves up a bumper eight race card on Saturday. Here we pick out our best bet in the feature contest of the Lincoln Handicap and highlight a couple of interesting each way shots on the undercard.
Lincoln Handicap: Doncaster Delight for David?
Mujtaba from the yard of William Haggas currently heads the betting for the big one, and it’s tough to find fault with a runner who has won all three starts with the minimum of fuss. However, priced at 7/2 with William Hill, he is a little short for our liking. A draw in box 2 may also prove far from ideal, with seven of the past nine winners having emerged from a double figure stall.
The one to be on for our money is the David O’Meara trained, Darkness. This son of smart sire Siyouni will be making his first appearance for O’Meara here having made the switch from the yard of Jean-Claude Rouget in France. A winner over this trip at Listed level for his former handler, he looks to have been handed a chance off a mark of 95, whilst a high draw in 20 may prove ideal. With one win and two placed finishers from his last seven runners in the race, O’Meara’s stats also read well. Throw in possible improvement to come on his first start following a gelding operation, and we like this ones chances of at least hitting the frame.

Brocklesby Stakes: Knowwhatimeanharry a Knockout Bet
No sense in looking at the form book in the opener, with the 13-runner field consisting of 13 debutants. However, that doesn’t mean a decent value bet can’t be found.
The money during the week for Richard Hannon’s Persian Force suggests a big run is expected and, hailing from a yard which does well with their juveniles, the son of Mehmas seems likely to be in the shakeup. He’s a short price at just 11/8 with William Hill, but his presence does lend a nice each way shape to the race.
With that in mind, we can’t resist a small each way play on the Bill Turner trained Knowwhatimeanharry. With six previous wins, Turner is the most successful trainer in the history of this race and may have just the right type to go close once again. Sire Havana Grey was a Group 1 winner over this trip, whilst Royal Applause also injects a dose of speed and class from the dam’s side. On pedigree, and trainer stats, the 40/1 available with William Hill may just represent a touch of value.

Spring Mile: Consolation Prize for Arthur
Just the nine go to post in the consolation race for the Lincoln, but this still looks a fiendishly competitive affair. Empirestateofmind heads the betting but is now 6lbs higher than his career high winning mark – a comment which also applies to second favourite General Lee, who in addition is yet to win at this trip. At a double figure price, the one to catch our eye is Ed Dunlop’s Arthur’s Realm. Boasting career form figures of 531 at this 1m trip, back down to his most recent winning mark of 81 and fit and well following a recent spin on the all-weather, he is fancied to go close for Rossa Ryan.
