Waddle: Guardiola must be the FA’s first pick for England job
Former England winger Chris Waddle has told NewBettingOffers.co.uk that Pep Guardiola should have already been contacted by the FA as their first choice to replace Gareth Southgate but if they can’t land the Manchester City manager, interim boss Lee Carsley would be a good option.

The FA should have already been in touch with Guardiola for the England job
Pep Guardiola should be England’s number one pick, and the FA should already be speaking to him. It is strange that he’s made a thing of only having one more year at Manchester City, because he probably knows more about what’s going on behind the scenes at the club than we do, in terms of there being a chance that they get relegated.
There are rumours that he’ll leave at the end of the season and that he wants an international job. If that’s the case, then I hope England have already spoken to him and can get him nailed down.
Guardiola knows what he wants, he has managed great players and all of them speak highly of him. England have looked at every way to win something. He is what they need to go and win a tournament. They’ve tried everything else, so for me Guardiola is the one.
Carsley has a chance if FA aren’t brave enough to take Guardiola
Waddle also put Lee Carsley’s name in the ring, suggesting that if the FA aren’t brave enough to pick Guardiola, then the current interim Three Lions boss has every chance of landing the permanent position.
Lee Carsley should get results in his first few games. In Ireland and Finland, England are playing teams that they should be beating. He will get results and if he plays attractive football on the front foot, everyone will be saying that is what England need. Then he might get the job.
I’m not sure the FA will be brave enough to give the job to Pep Guardiola. He’d tell the FA exactly what he wants and what they need to do, which they might not like.
If not Guardiola, then Carsley has a fair chance because he could well win every Nations League game when you look at the teams they’re up against.
Gordon can make the difference for new-look England
Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon impressed when starting for England in the 2-0 win over Ireland and former Magpie Waddle believes he could make the difference for Carsley’s team.
England have been crying out for players who can run with the ball and are willing to run in behind. Phil Foden didn’t do it at the Euros and he couldn’t get in the game, the same with Jude Bellingham. Bukayo Saka could’ve done more, and it was crying out for someone like Anthony Gordon to play and stretch teams.
I was very surprised he wasn’t used more at the Euros. I think he’ll get more minutes under Lee Carsley than he did under Gareth Southgate. He will get an opportunity.
You can’t just keep picking the same players. A new manager is not going to pick the same squad as the previous one and Carsley isn’t frightened of selecting a few of those players who he had in the under-21s and I’m sure he’ll continue to do that.
In the end, though, the key will be results and the style of play.
