US Open Golf 2019 Betting Preview
With the change in the golfing calendar, the third major of the season comes hot on the heels of the USPGA Championship, but takes place on the opposite side of the USA in California. The Pebble Beach golf course is known as being testing, and the key here is to navigate around the course, choosing the right moments to attack and the right to defend.
If you are looking for the man of the moment in majors then Brooks Koepka is your man. He has won four of the last eight majors, an incredible record and has a win at this course in this event to his name. He alongside last week’s winner in Canada Rory McIlroy, join Dustin Johnson at the top of the betting markets, with all three winning this event in the past.
However, if you are looking for value this week then it may be best to look away from those three and a little further down the list of entries. Patrick Cantlay has had a slower ascent to the top of the game than many, due to injuries and other troubles but he is finally bursting onto the scene and picked up his second tour win just a couple of weeks ago.
He was in contention at Augusta for The Masters, that will have given him a feel for what it is like to challenge at a big event, and this is his home tournament, being a Californian. His game matches up with the course nicely too, he is good off the tee which is required here, while he can also battle and save himself when required.
He leads the PGA in avoiding bogeys, this course will trouble every player who plays this week and the one to come out on top may be the one who can battle and save themselves from time to time. That is even more likely to happen given the forecast poor playing conditions we have for the event.
This year could be won by a shorter hitter, as we have seen in the past here, with accuracy and toughness coming to the fore. The man best fitting that description for me is Patrick Cantlay and that is why he is the bet of the week in the US Open.
