Stan Collymore: Liverpool must give Salah whatever he wants
Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has told NewBettingOffers.co.uk that he believes the positives of giving Mohamed Salah a new contract and keeping him at the club outweigh the potential financial burdens that’ll come with it, claiming that the Egyptian winger is just as valuable to The Reds off the pitch than he is on it.
Speaking to NewBettingOffers.co.uk, Collymore said: “There’s no one out there who has the pace, the goal output and the name recognition factor that Mohamed Salah has, so for me it’s simple, just give him what he wants. There is the argument though that he didn’t have a great spell after his last contract renewal but I don’t think they’d have the same problem this time.
“I think the situation with Salah is similar to that of Trent Alexander-Arnold. For Liverpool, they’re both legends and have won everything there is to win already, but there’s a perception among the players that it takes a long time to get the kind of money Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne get at Manchester City.
“I think Arne Slot being in there as a different voice will help and he’ll be thinking that maybe Salah’s output won’t be as high over the coming seasons, but having a player like him at your club will be massive in bringing in new, exciting talent. He’s a totem of the club, it’d keep the fans happy, he’s not controversial doing Zlatan Ibrahimovic-type interviews, he just does his job on the pitch, so I think pay him the money and keep him at Liverpool.”
Salah works a lot harder for a lot less
Collymore also commented on how Salah is working far harder for less money at Liverpool at the moment compared to those at clubs like Manchester City.
He said: “Liverpool will be questioning whether his output in season two or three of a new contract will match paying him £400k a week with massive goal bonuses. They’ve got to make a financial decision, but the caveat is, if they let him go who will replace him? I know clubs like City have more money, but Salah has had to do a lot more to receive a lot less at Liverpool. I think he knows what’s out there on offer, and he knows he could go to the Saudi Pro League tomorrow and be the top man in that league, not just for sporting reasons but culturally as well.
“He’ll be thinking, ‘I’m happy here, I’m scoring goals and I’m productive, but you’ve got to pay me the going rate’. The problem is always that when you’re paying someone in their 30s, you’re paying them more for less output, that’s the bizarre thing about professional football.”
It’s not as easy as just ‘replacing’ Salah
Collymore claims that since the era of Ronaldo and Messi, there’s been a massive drop off in the highest-quality talent, highlighting that finding a replacement for Salah won’t be easy.
“After the Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi era, we’re now in the era of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe,” said Collymore. “But they’re a massive drop off. They’re classed as the big superstars that all advertisers want to hang their hat on, and although they both score goals, Mbappe is having a tough season at Real Madrid and Haaland looks like a League Two player outside of the box.
“The question is whether the likes of Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota will be able to step up and be as prolific. They’ve got to do the calculations and see how much it would cost to replace someone like Salah relative to what they’d pay if they gave him a new contract.”
