Cristiano Ronaldo is a man never far away from the footballing headlines. In what effectively amounted to an open invitation to be sacked, Ronaldo suggested that United had made no progress at all since he departed for the first time in 2009, that he felt “betrayed” by the club, and had “no respect” for manager Erik ten Haag. That ought to do it, and Ronaldo duly finds himself a free agent as he takes to the field in Qatar. The question now is where will the only man to score at five World Cup Finals end up next? Sporting Lisbon – 5/1
If this is to be the final transfer of the 37-year-old’s career, a move to Sporting Lisbon would provide a certain symmetry. It was after all at Sporting that Ronaldo first exploded onto the scene, catching the eye of Manchester United with a series of electrifying displays down the wing during the 2002/3 season. A move back home and the prospect of Champions League football may prove an attractive combination if Sporting can come up with a suitable package.
Chelsea – 11/2
If Ronaldo is to remain in the Premier League, it seems that Stamford Bridge may be his most likely destination. A goal-getting striker is certainly high on the wish list of The Blues, and the west London decision-makers may view CR7 as an ideal short-term solution as they look to breathe some much-needed life into their push for the Champion League positions. A move to an immediate rival to Manchester United may appear unlikely at first glance, but it should be remembered that Ronaldo was reportedly on the verge of signing for Manchester City until United stepped in last year.

Major League Football has been growing in profile and significance over the past decade, receiving a big boost with the arrival of David Beckham at LA Galaxy back in 2007. A breeding ground for top talent – with several Premier League stars having made their name in the MLS, the league is also becoming an attractive destination for European Stars approaching the end of their careers – Gareth Bale being just one example. Ronaldo himself certainly seems impressed, stating back in 2016, "I mean, what's happening there is great, it's fantastic—maybe in the future will be a good chance for me to play there.” Beckham’s Inter Miami, LA Galaxy, and LAFC are reported to be amongst the clubs interested.
Newcastle United – 8/1
It wouldn’t be a major transfer betting market without money-bags Newcastle United featuring somewhere. Stranger things have certainly happened, but on the face of it, this one wouldn’t appear to make much sense. Whilst Newcastle did go with experience in the first window following the Saudi takeover, their signings since have shown a definite tendency towards younger players who can grow with the side. The recent petulance of Ronaldo also seems likely to see him fall short of Eddie Howe’s insistence on signing only the right characters.

More logical would be a switch to the German giants of Bayern Munich. Having already proved his worth in the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A, a season or two in the Bundesliga would see Ronaldo complete the set of Europe’s four major leagues. Forced to spread the goals around more since the departure of Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona, adding the current 18-yard-box predator version of Ronaldo may prove an attractive proposition for both sides.
