Premier League Season Preview
Premier League football is back and fans from all over the world will be counting the days until the first game gets underway at Old Trafford on Friday night, when Man Utd host Leicester City.
This has been a relatively quiet summer in the Premier League, mainly due to the World Cup taking place, but there is still a lot to look forward to this season. If you are placing a bet on the Premier League then you will find a huge range of betting markets you can get involved with. The bookmakers are doing a great job of giving us multiple ways to bet, regardless of the team you want to put a wager on, and it is up to us as punters to find a way to back a winning selection.
Who will win the Premier League?
If you are looking at the winner of the division then it is hard to get away from Manchester City, who are clear favourites to lift back to back titles. They won the league with ease last season and although they haven’t really upgraded their squad over the summer, with the exception of Liverpool then neither have any of their rivals. I’m expecting to see Liverpool close the gap, but none of the rest look remotely capable of doing so at this stage.
Karamba have Man City installed as the 4/6 favourites to win the title this coming season, with Liverpool in behind as 15/4 second favourites. Elsewhere Manchester United are 8/1, Chelsea are 14/1, Tottenham 16/1 and rounding off the big six are Arsenal at 22/1. The bookmakers appear to have this about right going into the new campaign.
Who will finish in the top four?
The race for a top four spot is always something exciting to watch as the season develops and season 18/19 looks to be no different. Any club from the top six has a realistic chance of making the top four, meaning that at least two of the big guns will miss out. Last year this was Arsenal and Chelsea, will they do so again or can either one of them find a way back in? The bookmakers have Chelsea priced up at shorter than Tottenham to make the top four, so if their odds are correct, then the blues will replace Spurs. There isn’t much to choose between them, with Betfair Chelsea are 4/6 to make the top four while Tottenham are 8/11.
Those looking for value towards the top of the Premier League may be tempted by the 2/1 on offer with Betfair for Arsenal to finish inside the top four. The North London club have made big changes this summer, the biggest being bringing in new boss Unai Emery and although he looks to have a long term plan, success this season is a possibility.
Who will be relegated to the Championship?
The race to avoid relegation could well be one of the most exciting in recent years this coming season. Cardiff, Wolves and Fulham are the three new Premier League teams, but Wolves and Fulham have really strengthened and impressed this summer. Cardiff look like they are going to struggle, but it would be no surprise to see Wolves and Fulham survive comfortably.
Cardiff are favourites for relegation at 7/10 with 888 Sport, mainly due to them failing to improve in the same way that Wolves and Fulham have done. Second favourites are Huddersfield who are 5/4, also with 888 Sport. They survived last season, but struggled for big parts and it is unlikely they will have the same amount of luck this season. If you are looking for value then Newcastle have failed to strengthen their squad at all this season, and there appears to be discontent behind the scenes. They are priced up at 11/2 with 888 Sport to be relegated, and look to be worth a punt in what could turn out to be a troublesome season for them on and off the pitch.
Who will finish bottom of the Premier League?
Alongside placing a bet on who will be relegated from the top tier, you can also bet on who will finish at the very bottom of the Premier League. It is no surprise to see this market dominated by Cardiff and Huddersfield, with Cardiff at 9/4 with 888 Sport and Huddersfield at 4/1 with the same bookmaker.
Another of the Premier League newcomers, Fulham, are priced up at 5/1 to finish bottom of the league while Wolves are a much bigger price at 28/1. This shows just how much Wolves have done this summer to strengthen their squad and give them every chance of survival, something I think they will do with ease.
