PDC World Championship 2021 Betting Preview
The Ally Pally won’t have its usual bounce this year, and could have no bounce at all depending on a decision made over tiers in the UK over the coming days. However, despite that, the premier darts event of the year will take place and it will certainly be one to enjoy.
You can’t look at a darts betting market without seeing Michael Van Gerwen at the head of the betting, can he win his crown back or are we in for a surprise?
With little or potentially no fans in attendance, those relatively inexperienced at the Ally Pally will certainly have it easier than they would have in the past, and that could help these players go up against the more experienced players on the tour.
Does Van Gerwen Win?
On his day, Michael Van Gerwen is the best player on the tour by some considerable distance. However, he has struggled this season to put together a run of good performances in a row. He’s been remarkable in one game, then struggled, particularly with doubles, in the next.
This year more than any other, you are taking a leap of faith with Van Gerwen, assuming the big event will drag him back to his best.
That doesn’t make him good value though, it is best to look elsewhere.
Who are the Main Challengers?
With the fact that this competition will not have the big atmosphere that we are used to, it could be time to look at a couple of younger guys who are good players but are yet to win at the Palace.
Nathan Aspinall has looked a World Championship winner in waiting for a couple of years now and has a path to the final that avoids Van Gerwen. He will have to beat Gerwyn Price and Jose De Sousa to reach the semi finals, but has recently beaten Price on two occasions.
There isn’t anyone else in the quarter that would trouble Aspinall, and if he can get to the semi finals then who knows what will happen. He certainly looks good value at a big price.
We go up to quarter one for our second pick in the tournament, and this is where Michael Van Gerwen is. However, up against the Dutchman we are siding with Dimitri Van Den Bergh. He is a player who relishes playing here, twice being in the quarter finals in the last three years and if anything, he is a far better player coming into the 2021 event.
If Van Gerwen slips up, it could be before the final, and on his day, Van Den Bergh is capable of causing problems. You will know your fate pretty early with Van Den Bergh, but if he or someone else knocks Van Gerwen out in the quarters or before, this tournament will be blown wide open.
