Pat Nevin: It’s the right time for Trent to leave Liverpool
Former Everton winger Pat Nevin has told NewBettingOffers.co.uk that he believes it was the right decision for Trent Alexander-Arnold to leave Liverpool and that the Premier League champions won’t struggle without him next season.
Speaking to NewBettingOffers.co.uk, Nevin said: “It’s the right time for Trent Alexander-Arnold to go, but it’s not the right time for Liverpool to let him go! They’re not getting any money for him. At the end of the day, he’s a world-class player in his position and he’s gone for nothing!
“However, they were in a situation where they had to try and lock in three players to contracts next season, and out of him, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, the full-back is always going to be the first to go, it doesn’t matter who you are.
“When Conor Bradley came on against Chelsea to replace Trent over the weekend, the game changed. Bradley flew up the pitch a lot more. Liverpool aren’t losing a bad player of course, but they’ve got options, Bradley looks great.
“Trent’s defending is OK, it’s nothing special, and a lot of people are worried about what they’re going to be like without him. I assure you; Liverpool will be just fine! There are plenty of players we’ve seen in the Premier Leage this season who could do a good job there.”
Cunha could be a great signing for Man Utd
Discussing Manchester United, Nevin urged the Red Devils to prioritise building great squad depth this summer before making a big-money approach for Wolves ace Matheus Cunha.
Nevin said: “Matheus Cunha going to Manchester United this summer could be the start of them turning the ship around, but it could also be a disaster. Everyone knows his talent is unquestionable but although the prospect of Cunha is exciting, he needs players around him to shine – they don’t have that at the moment. United had the chance a few seasons ago to buy Harry Kane – he was a player they could have built the team around but they missed their chance.
“Everyone is aware that whatever it is that’s going on at United at the moment, it’s not good enough. That’s not an opinion, that’s a fact. United have a lot of spending to do this summer and if they manage to pull in Cunha, they’ll need to strengthen around him, too.
“If they get that sorted, then they need to sort out their wing-backs and bring in absolute specialists in that position – they need the best in the business. If they manage to do all of this, then bringing in Cunha looks a fantastic deal but they just need to prioritise what’s most important first.”
Antony is more comfortable outside of the Premier League
Nevin also commented on United winger Antony, who has been on loan at Real Betis, claiming he’s more suited to La Liga than the Premier League.
He added: “There’ll be a part of Antony who’ll be thinking he’s shown Manchester United that he’s not the problem, having turned his season around at Real Betis. However, I think he’s just better suited to La Liga than he is the Premier League.
“I don’t think he’ll stay a United player once he has finished his loan so a deal for him elsewhere outside of the Premier League would be ideal for him. I think if Betis offer him a permanent contract, that’s where he should go.”
