Newmarket Cambridgeshire Meeting: Final Day Best Bets
It’s a big weekend in the racing world, with Sunday afternoon set to be lit up by the titanic Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe from Longchamp. However, things aren’t too bad on the domestic front either, with Saturday seeing the ITV cameras head to Newmarket for the third and final day of the excellent Cambridgeshire meeting. Here, we pick out our best bets in the feature handicap and the three classy juvenile events on the card.
1:50 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes
Aidan O’Brien needs just one more win to draw level with Noel Murless as the most successful trainer in the history of this Group 3 affair, and in the Justify colt, Capulet, he may have the horse to do it. Whenever a runner from this yard wins first time out, they are usually worth sticking in the notebook, and Capulet built on his debut success when going down narrowly to 2.4 million Guineas stablemate Diego Velazquez at Leopardstown. Deepone was four lengths adrift that day but has since landed a Group 2 contest at the Curragh in fine style, lending a solid look to the form. Godolphin’s Aablan is feared most amongst the opposition, but the mount of Ryan Moore is fancied to get the job done.

2:25 Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes
The juvenile fillies take to the track in the first Group 1 on the card, with the William Haggas runner Relief Rally currently heading the betting at around the 2/1 mark. Having won four of five starts, she merits plenty of respect, but this looks to be her stiffest assignment to date, and we prefer an each-way punt. The one to be on at a double-figure price is Sacred Angel from the yard of Charlie Johnston. An impressive winner of the Group 3 Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot, she was then plunged into Group 1 company against the boys in the Prix Morny. She didn’t look to be in love with the soft ground that day but still ran with credit to finish fourth, just behind Royal Tiber, who is vying for favouritism in the Middle Park Stakes, with Norfolk winner Valiant Force amongst those in behind. Back on a sounder surface here, she looks good value to hit the frame.

3:00 Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes
Prix Morny winner Vandeek heads the betting in this event for the colts, with that success in France representing the strongest form in the race. However, his three wins to date have all come on ground containing the word soft in the description, and he seems likely to be faced with good to firm here. He may well handle it, but with that slight question mark, we are reluctant to take odds of around the 2/1 mark. Take a chance instead that the Frankel colt, Task Force may deliver on his immense pedigree potential. Sired by the greatest of all time, his dam, Special Duty, was no slouch either, having landed the 2000 edition of the 1000 Guineas. A perfect 2 from 2 thus far, he can give the market leaders something to think about under Rossa Ryan.

3:40 bet365 Cambridgeshire
No fewer than 35 go to post for this huge handicap contest. Nevertheless, we still have a pretty warm favourite in the shape of 4/1 shot Greek Order, who is the only runner currently available at a single-figure price. He may well prove too good, but has a 10lb penalty to defy for his most recent success, in addition to the potential traffic problems which are almost unavoidable in this race. With LiveScoreBet paying out each way on the first seven places, we prefer to take a stab at a much bigger price. Sticking to the Frankel colts out of 1000 Guineas winners theme, the son of Attraction, Sayf Al Dawla is the one to get the vote. Lightly raced for a five-year-old, he will be making only his eighth career start here and could prove well in off a mark of 83. A draw in stall 17 gives him options to follow the pace on either side, and he showed a liking for these conditions when landing a good ground 1m2f Novice event at Salisbury last season. Unable to cope with a welter burden of 9st 12lb in a Newbury slog last time out, he shoulders just 8st3lb here, and a return to quicker ground may see him in a much better light.
