Markus Babbel: Arne Slot is right not to sign anyone yet
Speaking to NewBettingOffers.co.uk, ex-Liverpool defender Markus Babbel gave his thoughts on Liverpool’s summer transfer window so far, as well as talking through some of the current members of Arne Slot’s squad and potential targets for Liverpool to sign before the window shuts.
Liverpool may have had a quiet window so far, but Babbel believes that Arne Slot is doing the right thing in biding his time and waiting until he knows exactly what he needs to strengthen his squad.
Babbel said: “Liverpool are still yet to sign anyone in this transfer window but I don’t know what kind of talent they may have waiting in the academy. There could be a special player in there waiting to come into the first team.
“The good thing for Arne Slot is that there’s still time left for him to sign players before the window shuts. In his position, I would do exactly what he’s done so far because I would want to know exactly what I have in the current squad before I sign anyone. He has been working with the squad for a few weeks so now he can identify where he might want to sign someone.
Zubimendi is fantastic, but Goretzka would be a great signing
Liverpool have been linked with Spanish midfielder Martín Zubimendi and although Babbel recognises his talent, he believes that the Reds should make a move for Leon Goretzka as the German midfielder could be available at a cut price having fallen out of favour at Bayern Munich.
“One player who I’ve seen linked with Liverpool is Martín Zubimendi,” said Babbel. “He is a fantastic player, as he showed in the second half of the Euros final when he replaced Rodri. But the question is, do Liverpool need him? That is for Arne Slot to decide. If he decides that Zubimendi would be a good fit for that position and how he wants to play, then Liverpool will go and buy him.
“One player who could be an interesting option for Liverpool is Leon Goretzka. It seems as though Bayern Munich don’t want him anymore and I’m not quite sure why, because I believe he is a fantastic player. He is a number eight who can play box-to-box, he’s physically strong and technically good. I could see him in a Liverpool shirt. He shouldn’t be too expensive because Bayern want to get rid of him, but he’s still a top player and that would be a great signing for Liverpool.”
Elliott and Jones must step up
Babbel also commented on two of Liverpool current midfielders, Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones, stating that they must now step up to become first team regulars as they will no longer be considered youngsters.
“Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones could take the next step this season,” he said. “They are both massively talented but now they have to take that next step and become a bigger part of the first team. They were young players before, but now they are not. The next generation is already coming through and they have to show Slot that they’re ready to play a big part this season and be first team regulars.”
