Lee Sharpe: If the FA don’t think Carsley is qualified, they’ll replace him with Howe or Potter
Speaking to NewBettingOffers.co.uk, former England winger Lee Sharpe gave his thoughts on the Three Lions’ current interim manager Lee Carsley. Although in support of the current boss, Sharpe suggested that the FA may look to the likes of Eddie Howe or Graham Potter as alternative options.
Sharpe said: “Lee Carsley has been positive so far, and has introduced a few new names to the squad that look really exciting. I would have no qualms if we gave the job to him for a couple of years and see how he does when taking England to the next tournament.
“If the FA have got other people lining up and don’t think Carsley is qualified enough yet then they might take him back to the u21s. If that’s the case, you have to look at some other English managers like Eddie Howe and Graham Potter who are young and innovative. We need fresh, footballing managers.
“I don’t think England’s two wins in the Nations’ League have done Lee Carsley’s chances of becoming the permanent manager any harm. I think he’s got this interim job because of his record with the U21s where he did a great job – he improved the players and improved the team. He got a lot of great results there and I think a lot of the players like him in the full squad."
Sharpe added that Carsley does have the advantage of being familiar with the England system with existing ties to the FA as U21s coach.
Adding to his reasons for Carsley being a good permanent option for England, Sharpe suggested that the FA may know more about him than the other coaches due to his time with the U21 squad.
“Carsley knows the FA and he knows the players who he coached at U21 level. He knows the system and how it works, he knows what’s what – it seems a seamless transition. He’s done a great job so far, despite those two fixtures being ones you’d expect England to win anyway. They played nice, attractive football so I’d be happy to see him take us to the next tournament.
“It's difficult for me to say whether I think Carsley is the right man for the job, though, as I have never really watched the U21s play, so I don’t know enough about him as a manager or a person yet. We know the likes of Potter through press interviews and watching him manage Brighton and Chelsea. We’ve also seen Howe and the teams he’s managed and how exciting they are.”
Angel Gomes and Noni Madueke are exactly what England need
Following England’s opening two games in the Nations’ League, Sharpe piled on the praise for young talents Angel Gomes and Noni Madueke, citing them as players that are vital to England’s squad.
“Angel Gomes is exactly what England need. We need different styles of players. We play against a lot of teams who just sit back against us and we need someone to come in with that energy and creativity who has a lot of awareness about what’s going on around him. I think he looked really comfortable, and tidy.
“I also like Noni Madueke. I think he’s another exceptional talent who just looks like he wants to destroy full backs and take people on going forward. The future is bright for England and if we can just have a bit of positivity around the team then we can go pretty far.”
