Johnny Nelson: Usyk will stop Dubois in round eight or nine
Former professional boxer Johnny Nelson has told NewBettingOffers.co.uk that he expects Oleksandr Usyk to stop Daniel Dubois in the latter rounds of Saturday’s undisputed heavyweight title fight at Wembley Stadium.
Usyk defeated Dubois in the ninth round of their first clash in Poland in 2023 and Nelson can see a repeat performance from the dominant Ukrainian when the two touch gloves in London this weekend.
Speaking to NewBettingOffers.co.uk, Nelson said: “Oleksandr Usyk will have to weather a storm because Don Charles, Daniel Dubois’ coach, is a great tactician. Charles will tell Dubois to sit on Usyk and not stand off him. Daniel's going to try and put it on him. It's going to be like a bull and a matador for the first two or three rounds until Dubois’ nervous energy slows down a little bit.
He’ll pick and pop and then the popping will become bashing and then bashing will become banging.
“Usyk’s got to keep moving at 38 years old. He's got to be smart about his movement and in his energy reserves. He’ll pick and pop and then the popping will become bashing and then bashing will become banging. Timing is everything. It'll be a slow offload for Usyk, but Dubois is going to have to hope that the two things he’s got in his favour work out before Usyk gets into a rhythm, which are pace and strength.
“Usyk said there's no point in being able to hit hard if there's nothing to hit, and that's exactly what this fight will be about. Dubois’ power is great, and there have been many heavy-handed fighters through the years, but it means nothing if you can't hit anything – that's why Daniel's tactics have got to be smart.”
Giving his prediction for the fight, Nelson added: “Once you've been in the ring with Usyk once, he is very good at downloading the data. And the more Dubois tries to rush him, the more it suits Usyk.
“Dubois will have the crowd, and he will have to make things awkward for Usyk, make the fight unorthodox and get Usyk complaining to the referee. Dubois has almost got to play it a little bit dirty and make Usyk uncomfortable in the ring and take him out of his stride. But I reckon Usyk will stop Dubois in either round eight or nine.”
Fury is not retired, it’s a negotiation tactic
Ex-cruiserweight world champion Nelson also discussed Tyson Fury’s retirement. Nelson reckons that all the talk about Fury being retired is false, and that as a self-proclaimed “fighting man”, he won’t leave the sport until he physically can’t cope with it anymore.
That said, Nelson sees the possibility of a highly-anticipated and sought-after all-British clash between Fury and Anthony Joshua, claiming that would be a far bigger fight than the prospect of either of them fighting Usyk after Dubois.
He said: “Tyson Fury is not retired; he's not gone anywhere. So, when people are saying Fury is back, he hasn’t gone anywhere in the first place. People use the word retirement as a negotiating skill and Tyson is one of those people. This is part of negotiations for a purse.
one thing he keeps saying is that he’s a fighting man. The fighting will leave him before he leaves fighting
“Fury has not retired. You have to remember one thing he keeps saying is that he’s a fighting man. The fighting will leave him before he leaves fighting. He’s still said he’ll fight either Anthony Joshua or Oleksandr Usyk for a title so I think it’s just part of his negotiations.
“If you said to both Fury and Joshua, you can fight each other or you can fight against Usyk, they’d both choose to fight each other, that’s the one dust-up that lights the fire in them. It’s because the chances of them losing again to Usyk are very strong, but the chances of them losing to one another as far as they're concerned, are unknown.
“It'd be a massive purse because it’d be a huge fight and it's probably even a bigger draw than taking on Usyk. You could put the Fury-AJ fight on anywhere on the planet and you'd pack it out. These guys know that they're still holding on by the tip of their fingers of being in that position.
“The Fury-AJ fight has crossover appeal. It wouldn’t just be boxing fans that would be intrigued and excited about it, it will be anybody. The fight between those two would be massive and far bigger than if they were to fight Usyk instead.”
