Jermaine Pennant: Bellingham can surpass Beckham and reach Zidane status
Former La Liga winger Jermaine Pennant has told NewBettingOffers.co.uk that he has been impressed with Jude Bellingham’s start to life at Real Madrid, tipping his career to surpass some of the club’s greatest ever players.
Pennant was full of praise for the fellow former Birmingham City midfielder, suggesting Bellingham has already received a similar level of support from the Real Madrid fans as they showed for Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham.
Speaking to NewBettingOffers.co.uk, Pennant said: “I’ve been really impressed with Jude Bellingham’s start to life at Real Madrid – he’s a real star. He moved from Borussia Dortmund to join Real Madrid on the biggest stage, a lot of players have tried that and failed.
“It’s such a demanding club with great history, and not a lot of English players have been able to go out there and succeed. David Beckham is probably the only one who really went out there and did it, now Bellingham is in that category.
“He’s won the Champions League, and he’s already a fan favourite. They’re a team and a fanbase that are very difficult to win over unless you’re someone like Cristiano Ronaldo or Beckham, so for him to already have that level of support from the fans is brilliant to see.
“We saw Kylian Mbappé join last summer, and he has had a difficult start to his Madrid career, which just goes to show it’s not easy to go there and be a superstar straight away. You have to give Bellingham full credit for what he’s done so far.”
Bellingham’s Real feats will surpass those of Beckham
Comparing Jude Bellingham’s legacy to that of David Beckham — who never won the Champions League with Real Madrid — Pennant believes Bellingham has every chance of surpassing his fellow countryman’s success at the Bernabéu, if he continues to perform at a high level.
“David Beckham was a global superstar when he joined Real Madrid,” said Pennant. “Looking solely at the Champions League, you could say Jude Bellingham has already achieved more than him at Madrid, and they’ve won the same number of La Liga titles.
“If Bellingham continues on his current trajectory, then I think without a doubt he’ll surpass Beckham’s achievements at Real Madrid.”
Bellingham can be the next Zidane
Continuing comparisons between Jude Bellingham and former Real Madrid stars, Pennant likened the Englishman’s playing style to that of Ballon d’Or winner Zinedine Zidane. The Frenchman – who previously wore Bellingham’s No5 shirt in Madrid – is regarded as one of their greatest ever players, and Pennant believes Bellingham can reach the same level as his predecessor.
“You can see the fans love Bellingham already,” he said. “If he continues to perform then he’ll become one of the Real Madrid greats. He’s got it in him to be a Zidane-like figure, wearing his No5 shirt.
“If he continues in the right direction then he’s got all the ability to be a club legend.”
