Gus Poyet talks Tottenham
Speaking to NewBettingOffers.co.uk, former Tottenham midfielder Gus Poyet feels that Spurs need to have full faith in Ange Postecoglou and should ‘trust the process’.
In an exclusive interview, Poyet said that Spurs fans had a tendency to complain about how defensively the team was set up under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, but now they find themselves with a manager who does the opposite and has curated a team that play high up the pitch. The fans love it as a result.
When asked about Spurs’ form this season, Poyet emphasised the injury troubles plaguing his former side, and that backup players need to be able to come into the side and fit Postecoglou’s style of play.
Poyet also commented on the signing of Richarlison and how good an opportunity it was for him at time. However, he felt that the Brazilian forward needs to take it upon himself to get back in the Spurs side.

Spurs need proper squad depth
To maintain the level of performance and win playing in the way they do for the long term, Spurs need their best players fit. When the best players aren’t fit then the quality of the squad comes into the equation, and you need proper depth.
As coaches we always think that everything is okay when it is going well, but then you miss your best player for a period of time and realise that everything may not be fine. It also depends on who you have fixtures against in that period when you are missing your key players.
Now Spurs are without their two starting centre-backs. The replacements are decent players, and I would be comfortable playing Ben Davies as the left centre-back, but he was a left-back originally and he has certain characteristics that do not translate across the two positions.

Postecoglou has been asked about his style of play and has said that it is not going to change. If I were to play right-back I cannot play there, but I would have to adapt and find a way to be able to fit into the manager’s system.
Richarlison might have missed his opportunity to be Spurs’ number nine
When Spurs signed Richarlison I thought it was a great opportunity for him, because they were always missing a player that was able to play if Harry Kane couldn’t for whatever reason. It seemed perfect, and he did okay when Kane was still there.

As a player, you can complain that you do not play under one coach, then the next coach, but you cannot blame everyone. Sometimes you just need to take a look at yourself. He is a talented player, but he needs to play in a certain way, and I don’t know if he has the right characteristics to play as the number nine in Postecoglou’s system.
If I were the coach, I would be constantly communicating with him. I would talk to him a lot about what I need in that position and what he needs to do more or less of to have a better chance of making the starting XI.
Prior to January, as a manager, you have to outline the steps he has to take to become part of the team. Then when you get to January, or to the end of the season, you need to make a decision. The player will want to play, he does not want to be on the bench. It is more on him than it is the coach to find a way for him to get back into the Spurs side.
