Best Odds Guaranteed

Best Odds Guaranteed has become an essential tool for regular horse racing and greyhound punters, however more casual bettors may not be familiar with this term, so here’s a short and sweet explanation:

Some online betting sites will offer Best Odds Guaranteed (or BOG for short) on all UK and Irish racing, others will offer it on selected races and some won’t offer it at all. Put simply Best Odds Guaranteed means you if you place your bet and take the odds available at the time, if the odds of your horse then drifts and gets bigger, to the point where your horse starts the race at bigger odds than you placed your bet at earlier, your bet will be settled at the bigger starting price. Likewise if the odds of your selection shortens, then your bet will still be settled at the bigger odds which you had taken earlier. So really it’s a no-brainer. If Best Odds Guaranteed is available, always take it. Read our Best Odds Guaranteed Guide for a fuller explanation and the complete list of bookies currently offering this service.

Here’s our pick of the Best Odds Guaranteed Bookmakers:

Non Runner No Bet

“Non runner no bet” is a specific feature you’ll want to look out for if placing your Grand National bets before the day of the race. If you place your bets on the day of the race and your horse subsequently doesn’t take part, you will get your money back, however, usually with bets placed days or weeks in advance of the big race this is not the case and you would lose your stake money. This is why bookmakers run the Non Runner No Bet concession (or NRNB for short), to give their customers peace of mind that if their horse doesn’t run they will get their money back.

As we’ve said, if you are placing your Grand National bets on the day of the race then you needn’t worry about this, but if you are looking to get your bets on a few days in advance and maybe take advantage of some odds you think will shorten up, then make sure you check that your chosen bookmaker is offering NRNB, also known as Non Runner Money Back (NRMB).

Bookies currently offering Non Runner No Bet on the Grand National 2021:

Extra each-way places available

Usually, for a Handicap race with 40 runners the “each way places” paid out would be 4 places. Therefore as another promotion and to stand out from the competition, some betting sites will offer to pay out on extra places too.

The nature of a race such as the Grand National means that most people will back two or three horses each-way to have a few shots at winning, therefore any bookie offering to pay out on 5th place as well is definitely worth your consideration.

To take this one step further you will find that some betting sites also enhance the terms of which they pay out on the “place” part of your bet from 1/5 odds to ¼ odds. Read our Each-Way Betting and Place Terms Explainer for more on this. Obviously we can all see that winning ¼ of something is better than winning 1/5 of something, therefore make sure you look out for these place terms to maximise your potential returns.

Betting sites with enhanced each-way place terms for the Grand National:

Bet365 - Paying 5 places at 1/4 odds

Betfred – Paying 5 places at 1/5 odds

Betfair - Paying 5 places at 1/5 odds

Spreadex – Paying 5 places at 1/5 odds

Getting the Best Odds on your Grand National Bet

When placing your bets on the Grand National it pays to look around and see which betting sites have the best odds for your chosen horse. You can do this by simply comparing the odds from multiple sites, however this could get messy if you are looking to back a handful of runners and each happens to be best priced at different bookies, as this could mean opening several different accounts to get all of your bets on. Another way to approach this would be to gain an understanding of betting margins and which bookmakers offer the lowest margins on horse racing. This will give you insight into which betting sites offer the better odds on a more consistent basis, and will help you maximise any returns in the long run.

Grand National 2021 Betting Tips

A new name will go on the Grand National trophy in 2021, with Tiger Roll, winner of the last two events in 2018 and 2019, confirmed as not heading to the race.

That leaves the door open for a new horse to come and grab the imagination of the public by winning one of the biggest horse races in the world.

At this early stage, we have a good idea of who will be running so here are four horses to consider, including two long shots that could cause an upset.

Any Second Now

Ted Walsh is a very shrewd Irish trainer and will have been eyeing up the Grand National for this horse for some time now. He has been weighted and then ran not too long after, winning by 10 lengths to show that his weight may have been underestimated a little.

He’s a strong stayer and recorded a Cheltenham win over 3m2f a couple of years ago, but has also shown the speed to win over distances as short as 2m, which is important for a Grand National. This one looks primed for a big run on the day.

Secret Reprieve

This horse has just six chase starts to his name and only a total of nine starts under rules in total. That isn’t the usual National profile, but you cannot help being excited by him. He’s proven his ability to jump well and stay this kind of trip by winning the Welsh Grand National back in January, which has taken his season record to two wins from three starts.

Whatever this horse does this season, he will be in a far better position to win the Grand National next year and beyond, however, he could well do it this year given the strong impression he’s already made.

Canelo

This horse hasn’t been trained with the Grand National in mind, but excellent performances this season may take him there. He’s not a guaranteed stayer, so if the ground is good then that will certainly suit his chances and others who may not quite get home.

He’s been rock solid in some very big handicaps recently, including a win in the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby on Boxing Day. If the ground isn’t too testing, Canelo can get involved at a big price.

Definitly Red

Now 12 year old, this certainly is last chance saloon for Definitly Red, who comes here for the Brian Ellison team. He was behind favourite Cloth Cap in his prep run at Kelso, and his trainer was thrilled by that, as he felt there was still plenty to work on with his horse.

We know he will get the trip, he knows his way around here and he probably needs others to underperform a little to really get involved, but if they do, Definitly Red is certainly the type of horse who can pick up the pieces.

Grand National Betting Tips:

Any Second Now – win @ 12/1
Secret Reprieve – win @ 16/1
Canelo – EW @ 40/1
Definitly Red – EW @ 66/1

The Odds of previous Winners of the Grand National

The beauty of the Grand National is that every horse has a chance of winning. It is a “Handicap” race meaning the better the horse, the more weight it has to carry in a bid to level the playing field. This can result in some stunningly big priced winners (take 2009 winner Mon Mome at 100/1!). Looking back over the last 10 years the favourite has only won the race twice and the average price for the winner has been just north of 22/1. These numbers just go to show that anything really can win the Grand National and to have a few quid each-way on a couple of bigger priced selections could be the way to go!

Grand National Roll of Honour

2020 – Race Cancelled due to Covid-19 pandemic
2019 – Tiger Roll 4/1
2018 – Tiger Roll 10/1
2017 – One For Arthur 14/1
2016 – Rule The World 33/1
2015 – Many Clouds 25/1
2014 – Pineau De Re 25/1
2013 – Auroras Encore 66/1
2012 – Neptune Collonges 33/1
2011 – Ballabriggs 14/1
2010 - Don’t Push It 10/1
2009 – Mon Mome 100/1

Grand National FAQs

The Grand National 2021 takes places on Saturday 10th April, at 5:15pm. You can watch it live on ITV.

The Current Favourite to win the Grand National is Cloth Cap trained by Jonjo O’Neill.

Over the last 30 years the favourite or joint favourite has won the Grand National on 6 occasions (20% of the time).

This is a subjective question and would depend on which horse you want to back. However, for a more general answer, to get the best odds you want to bet with a bookmaker that has low margins on Horse Racing (taking less profit for themselves and paying more out to punters). The best bookies for this would be bet365 and Betfred.
