Fury vs Usyk Fight Betting Preview
All eyes turn to the Kingdom Arena in Saudia this Saturday evening for the fight the world has been waiting for. Not since Lennox Lewis in 1999 has boxing enjoyed a unified Heavyweight Champion. All that is set to change in Riyadh as the Gypsy King Tyson Fury takes on Ukrainian sensation Oleksandr Usyk.
Somebody’s O Has Got to Go
The heavyweight division has enjoyed many thrilling spectacles over the past few years, but this showdown threatens to surpass them all. WBC Champion Fury arrives with a 34-0-1 record - the only slight blemish being that famous draw with Deontay Wilder - whilst the record of IBF, WBA, and WBO king Usyk reads a perfect 21-0.
The overall records of the fighters are all but flawless, but neither arrives on the back of a career-best effort. Whilst dominant for much of the fight with Daniel Dubois, Usyk was in serious trouble following a body shot from the Englishman – with many fans believing he was fortunate the referee deemed the crippling punch to be a low blow. Did Dubois expose a potential weakness in the Usyk armour?
Fury’s most recent appearance was the worst performance of his career, as he stumbled to a narrow points success over boxing novice Francis Ngannou – the same Ngannou that Anthony Joshua put to sleep in double-quick time in March. Did Fury take that fight way too lightly, or is the 35-year-old in decline?
A Clash of Size and Style
Besides the wealth of silverware on the line and boxing immortality, one of the aspects which makes this fight so intriguing is the stark difference between the fighters. At 6ft3 and around 221lb, Usyk is hardly a small man. However, he is no Tyson Fury, who stands at 6ft9 and tipped the scales at 277lb against Ngannou.
For a man his size, Fury boasts impressive speed and reflexes. Against fellow big men, his agility advantage gives him the edge, but against master technician Usyk, he may find the shoe on the other foot.
Given that size disparity and disadvantage in the power department, Usyk is expected to keep this fight at range, peppering Fury with jabs whilst he waits for an opening. Determining what Fury will do is more difficult. Whilst a capable tactician, attempting to outbox Usyk may be to his disadvantage, possibly leading to a punch-and-hold strategy as he uses his considerable bulk to sap the energy of the Ukrainian.
Too Close to Call
Fury was the clear favourite with most compilers when this fight was confirmed. However, following that underwhelming display against Ngannou, the pair are much tougher to split – bet365 go 10/11 Fury, 10/11 Usyk, and 12/1 the draw.
Best Bets
Much like the compilers, we find this incredibly tough to call. As such, those odds-on quotes for either fighter make limited appeal. Nevertheless, there are a few decent bets to be found.
If Usyk is to win this, it will most likely be on points – having witnessed Fury rise like Lazurus following a Deontay Wilder haymaker, we are prepared to believe he can get up from anything, but he may struggle to live with the pace of the smaller man.
However, Fury possesses the power to stop Usyk if he can find the gaps. Usyk probably has the nous to avoid early trouble, but that weight discrepancy may begin to tell in the middle rounds. Potential fatigue and that possible weakness in the body make a Fury win in Rounds 5-8 an appealing proposition.
