Chris Waddle: Palace will end up selling Marc Guehi to Newcastle
Former Newcastle forward Chris Waddle has told NewBettingOffers.co.uk that he believes despite the back and forth over Crystal Palace centre-half Marc Guehi, Newcastle will end up giving Palace what they want for him come deadline day and Selhurst Park chiefs will have to accept it as good business.
Read more on what he had to say below.
Palace aren’t panicking over Guehi sale, but will leave it until deadline day for best deal
I think Newcastle have had a decent window this summer but they have the same problems, that centre-half and centre forward position. I can see why they went for Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace and identified him as a target. Fair play to Palace - he’s a good age and they know what he’s worth and Newcastle seem like they don’t want to pay.
Most clubs, apart from the big boys, do sell players and I think if Palace think they can get £60-65 million for him, they might think it’s good business
It looks like Palace aren’t panicking because they know they’ve got a good player but as for Newcastle, the longer it drags on the shorter it is until the deadline. It’s a game of cat and mouse at the moment between the two clubs but when it reaches deadline day and they haven’t got anyone else, I think they’ll offer Palace what they want for him. Most clubs, apart from the big boys, do sell players and I think if Palace think they can get £60-65 million for him, they might think it’s good business for a centre-half which they can invest elsewhere. Palace will hold tight but I think come the deadline, the deal will be made.
If Isak and Wilson are unfit, Newcastle are in trouble
Despite the talent Newcastle have up top, Waddle believes if both Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson are unfit, they could get caught out, so it might be worth looking at the Championship to find a proper number nine to bolster their depth.
Alexander Isak, if he stays fit for the whole season in the games Newcastle need him, I think he could have a massive influence on getting them into that top four. The balance of the side is good and they’ve got players who are exciting and can give anyone a game. Isak can make his own chances and score on his own so he’s a massive player for them, they just need to keep him fit.
Isak, like Callum Wilson, carries a lot of injuries. If they’re both fit, they’re two good centre forwards but they miss a lot of games when they’re not and if neither of them are available, that’s where Newcastle will get caught out. It’s not easy to sign a centre forward and it looks like it has been a real challenge for those looking to sign a number nine.
Newcastle might try and shuffle the pack and use players like Anthony Gordon up there, but it might be worth even looking at a Championship centre forward who could do a job for 10 to 12 games a season. They need someone who knows the role as a centre forward and somebody like that would be a good addition.
It’s the same story with the centre-halves. Dan Burn and Fabian Schar, who are both in their 30s, will become a problem with other injuries. You can see why they were trying to sign Guehi but again, they need to find someone who can play that role and they need to identify that player with only a couple of weeks left.
Howe needs to improve squad depth for a better stab at Europe
Waddle highlighted that financial fair play will hinder Eddie Howe from making all the transfers he wants, and he should be focusing on the centre-half and centre forward positions to strengthen first to give them a better chance at top four.
I think what let Newcastle down in Europe last season was the size and quality of their squad and I’m sure Eddie Howe has identified that and he’ll want to bring in three or four players. With financial fair play, they’ve had to sell some young players which they probably didn’t want to but to balance the books that’s what needs to be done.
The one or two he brings in then have to be right and that’s why the centre-half and centre forward is so important, the latter will be a difficult decision, though.
