Chris Sutton: Liverpool would be stupid to let Trent leave in January
Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton has told NewBettingOffers.co.uk that he believes Liverpool would be stupid to let Trent Alexander-Arnold leave in January.
Speaking to NewBettingOffers.co.uk, Sutton said: “I don’t see any reason as to why Liverpool would let Trent Alexander-Arnold leave in January – that would just be stupid. They’re fighting on both fronts to win the Premier League and Champions League, why would they let him go?
“We’ve seen it before with Trent that he’s capable of having the occasional bad game – like he did against Manchester United – and his defensive instincts are questioned. On the other hand, he has so much quality and he can decide games with a pass. He’s on a different level to virtually every other player in the league with his range of passing.
“From a Liverpool point of view, if they’re going to let him go then let him go in the summer. If they have to take the financial hit then that’s just something they’ve got to come to terms with. I do think he’ll end up at Real Madrid, but they can’t let it happen right now. With the position that Liverpool are in, I’m not sure he’d want to move on this month.”
Trent will already know his decision
While fans continue to wonder whether Alexander-Arnold will stay or leave, Sutton believes the defender already knows his future.
“Trent will already know what is going to happen,” said Sutton. “It’s very difficult to question whether a player’s game changes because he’s had his head turned by another club. Off the back of one poor performance against United, I think it’d be foolish to write Trent off and assume this is how he’s going to be for the rest of the season.
“Liverpool are fighting on multiple fronts this season and they’ll want two top players in every position. If Trent were to leave in January then they’d be running the risk of not giving themselves the best possible chance of winning both the Premier League and Champions League. I don’t see why they’d even think about letting him go this month.”
90% sure Trent will leave in the summer
Looking ahead to the summer transfer window, Sutton is 90% sure that Trent will leave Liverpool on a free transfer.
“There’s a very strong possibility Trent will leave on a free this summer,” he said. "I’m not a percentage expert but I’d say the chances are about 90%. It comes down to the fact he’s run his contract down – there’s a reason he’s done that. Players have a choice. You can’t tell me Liverpool think that this is an ideal situation with him being in the last six months of his contract given his age, profile and quality.
“You could argue that all three of Trent, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk would’ve been waiting to see what Arne Slot was like before deciding on a new contract, but for Trent there’s also the allure of Real Madrid. I don’t think anybody could begrudge him a move to Madrid, even the most ardent Liverpool fans. But there is always a right time to move and I don’t think it’s in January. I think he’ll leave at the end of the season.”
