Alan Hutton: Iraola would be a perfect Postecoglou replacement
Former Premier League defender Alan Hutton has told NewBettingOffers.co.uk that he believes Andoni Iraola would be a perfect fit to replace Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur should they choose to part ways with the Australian in the summer.
Hutton highlighted Iraola’s high-pressing in combination with defensive solidarity as components of his style of play that he feels would suit Spurs, encouraging Daniel Levy to consider the Bournemouth boss.
Speaking to NewBettingOffers.co.uk, Hutton said: “I think Andoni Iraola fits the bill for what Tottenham are looking for in a manager. He plays with a high, aggressive press but his team is also defensively sound. They’re stable at the back and they can also be open and expansive as well.
What he has done at Bournemouth so far has been incredible. They play great football and are also getting results. No disrespect to them because I know they’re doing a lot better than Spurs at the moment, but if I think he could get even more out of a better group of players at Spurs.
“If he had a little bit of stardust then could he take a team even further than what he’s done at Bournemouth? He’s somebody that I think Daniel Levy should be looking at.”
I want to see Ange stay
Despite naming Iraola as a potential replacement, Hutton wants Postecoglou to remain in his post and be given the opportunity to turn things around in North London, suggesting that he needs to shore things up defensively if he wants to stay in the job.
“If Ange Postecoglou can win the Europa League then I think that will go a long way to keeping him in the job,” said Hutton. “That said, they could end up finishing 17th in the Premier League and they’ve already lost 18 games this season, as well as going out in the fourth round of the FA Cup and the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup – it’s not good enough.
“They’ve been chasing a trophy for a long time now, they’ve had a lot of strong squads and have come close. They’re doing that this season as well but the difference is their performance in the league.
“Being so open defensively hasn’t helped their cause and I think that is something Ange will need to address if he’s to take the team to the next level. Personally, I want to see him stay and succeed. Hopefully winning the Europa League could give him that opportunity.”
Losing is becoming the norm at Spurs
With both Spurs and Manchester United suffering below-par league campaigns, Hutton suggested that the Red Devils are coming under more scrutiny than his former side due to the expectations surrounding both clubs, adding that he feels failure to sustain a genuine challenge for silverware is becoming the norm for the club.
“Spurs are having a worse season than Manchester United, but there seems to be a bit less scrutiny on them from the media,” said Hutton. “That’s because United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and have been to years – that’s no disrespect to Spurs because they’re also a massive club.
“The scrutiny is heavily on United because they’ve had some success over the past few years and now the team on the pitch is well below the level expected of them. With Tottenham, they’ve had it in them for a number of years now where they try to compete for silverware and then inevitably fade away. That seems to be becoming the norm at Spurs. That is why they don’t get as much grief from the press as United.”
“Both teams will be wanting to turn things around and get back to where they want to be, fighting for silverware and European places.”
