2019 Men’s Australian Open Preview

Novak Djokovic

The start of the tennis season is always signalled by the Australian Open, which starts on Sunday evening. The first Grand Slam of the year really sets the tone for how the season is going to develop and this year is no different.

On the face of it, this tournament looks to be between two men. The first is Novak Djokovic, who is favourite at 6/5 with Karamba. Since having injury problems he has been nothing short of brilliant, and comes here on the back of winning the last two grand slam events. He has long since battled with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray at the top of the men’s game, but there is a chance that he grasps dominance this season all to himself.

It is clear to see why Djokovic is the favourite, and he is made even stronger by the fact that many of his rivals have question marks over them. He looks lean, fit and ready to dominate, and he will take some stopping down under.

Second favourite, at 5/1 with Karamba is Roger Federer who comes here as the reigning champion looking to defend his crown. When he turned 35 and 36 we questioned whether he had the ability to keep going at his age, and now he comes here as a 37 year old with a question mark raised about his age once more. At some point, Federer will slow down but up until we see that on the court you can never discount him from any tournament.

Those looking for a bigger priced selection should probably avoid the injury plagued Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray and instead look to someone who could become a star in the future. That is 21 year old German Alexander Zverev, who is available at 10/1 with Karamba. The young German needs to show he is capable of holding his form in five set games, as we have seen him at his best over a shorter distance, but if he can do that then he is a live outsider in all of the grand slam events this season, starting with this one. A few of you may not have heard too much about him just yet, but over the next couple of years there is every chance that this youngster could go all the way to the top.
