The old enemy Germany acts as host this time, but who will raise that famous trophy aloft on Sunday 14 July? Here, we look at the main contenders, the interesting outsiders, and pick out a couple of early punts in the Group stage and Top Scorer betting markets.

Euro 2024 Main Contenders

With the countdown now firmly on to a month-long feast of entertainment, fans around the world are discussing the most likely winners. Opinion varies widely, but the consensus is that the title is most likely to fall to one of the following four nations.

England

The current favourites for the tournament are England. Yes, England, the side who have never lifted the trophy, were singing about 30 years of hurt back in 1996 and have had to tack additional years on to that ditty with the passing of every tournament since.

As England fans born post-1966, we are well accustomed to the cycle of hope and ultimate disappointment that accompanies international tournaments. Will things be any different this time around? There are reasons to believe they might. Having come so close in 2020, if England were to make that small next step, they needed an injection of young world-class talent. Four years on, the squad has received just that. Foden and Bellingham, together with a more potent Bukayo Saka, provide an unrivalled trio of threats from midfield, Harry Kane is as lethal as ever, whilst, at the other end of the field, Southgate can be relied upon to have the side organised and tough to break down. This time, there are a few very good reasons to be optimistic. England are available to back at 10/3 with bet365.

France

Next in line at 7/2 with bet365 are Didier Deschamps Les Bleus outfit. France ended England’s dreams at the Quarter Final stages in the last World Cup, lifted this trophy twice in the past (most recently in 2000) and appear well-placed to make a deep run once again.

The first player to spring to mind when you think of France is, of course, arguably the best in the world, Kylian Mbappe. Lightning-quick, direct, and increasingly deadly when handed a chance, he almost single-handedly pulled France back from the brink in the World Cup Final, and is the single most dangerous match-winner in the tournament. However, there is much more to France than their flying forward. Deschamps is derided in some quarters for his pragmatic approach, but that ethos has taken the side to a win or runners-up finish in three of the last four major international tournaments. Elsewhere in the playing squad, France boasts the strongest defence in the competition and a high-energy, youthful midfield led by the likes of Aurelian Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga. France are as dangerous as ever.

Germany

The fact that Germany are third favourites (6/1 with bet365) owes much to their status as hosts. There may be something in that, with the host nation winning or making the final in five of the 16 previous editions. However, amongst such competition, Germany will need more than a fervent fanbase to propel them to glory, and this isn’t the Germany of old.

As hosts, Germany avoided the qualifying stages and, judging by their performances, that was possibly just as well – 2023 seeing only two wins from nine fixtures, including defeats to Poland, Colombia, Turkey and Austria. However, timing is everything in football, and Germany have been much better in 2024, beating France and the Netherlands in their two warm-up fixtures. On paper, the squad isn't as strong as that of England or France, with the lack of a proven striker being the glaring weakness. 31-year-old Niclas Fullkrug didn’t look like an obvious choice to fill that gap but has blossomed late with 11 goals in 15 appearances. This represents a step up for the classic style number nine, and he has to show he can do it on the big stage. If Germany go deep, it will most likely be on the back of breakout tournaments for the supremely talented youngsters Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala.

Spain

It wasn’t so long ago that Spain were THE team to beat ahead of any international tournament, with "La Roja" riding their Tiki-Taka style to wins in the 2008 and 2012 European Championships and 2010 World Cup. Things haven’t been so rosy since the break up of one of the most talented international squads ever assembled – a semi-final appearance at Euro 2020 being their best effort.

Qualifying went smoothly enough, with seven wins in eight games and a +20 goal difference, but they did manage to lose to Scotland, showing they are far from infallible. The playing squad is broadly on a par with that of Germany, slightly weaker in defence, slightly better in midfield with a prime Rodri running the show, but again lacking a proven, reliable hitman – Alvaro Morata being the most prolific of their attacking options. For those who believe they are up to the task, Spain can be supported at 8/1 with bet365.

Any Other Contenders?

Of the other nations, Portugal (8/1 with bet365) are the obvious standout side. Diogo Costa, Ruben Dias, Bruno Fernandes, and 39-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo represent a quality spine, whilst Bernardo Silva, Rafael Leao, and Joao Felix provide creative and direct threats. Flawless in qualifying, with 10 wins from 10 and an average of 3.60 goals per game, they arrive in solid form. If there is a nagging doubt, it concerns the manager, Roberto Martinez – having failed to win anything with Belgium’s golden generation, will he fare any better here?

Moving into the sides available at double-figure prices, Italy (14/1 with bet365) made hard work of qualifying but arrive as the reigning champions and weren’t particularly fancied last time around. With Gianluigi Donnarumma, Matteo Darmian, and Jorginho in the squad, they won’t fall short in terms of experience but lack the obvious match winners of the more fancied nations.

Netherlands, Belgium, Croatia, and Denmark come next but make limited appeal on current form. If there is to be an outright shock in the tournament, Hungary may be the team to provide it. One of the few sides on a genuine upward curve, they went unbeaten in qualifying and beat England home and away in the latest UEFA Nations League. At 80/1 with bet365, they look like a decent bet for those looking to take a flyer at a big price.

Top Scorer Betting

At 5/1 and 11/2 respectively, Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane dominate the top goalscorer betting, and it’s hard to argue with that assessment. Mbappé isn’t dismissed lightly, but he may be playing catch-up after the Group stage. Expect Kane to make hay against an overmatched Slovenia and a gung-ho Serbia. If he can grab a strike in a tight encounter against Denmark, he may have one hand on the trophy.

Given his electric form for Manchester City, Phil Foden (33/1 with bet365) looks like a solid each-way option, whilst, at a really big price, Dominik Szoboszlai is the man who makes Hungary tick, is on all the set-pieces, and may have a squeak of making the top four scorers to land the each-way side of the bet at 200/1 with bet365.

Group Betting

All six Groups at the finals feature an odds-on favourite, which makes finding an enticing punt for the opening phase a little tricky. Whilst it is tempting to stick England, France, Spain, and Germany in a straight acca, we prefer to pick out four sides who may cause a shock and take a chance on a potentially more rewarding acca.

Sticking with our opinion that Hungary may be the surprise package in the tournament, we will take the improving Magyars to see off up and down Germany, a run-of-the-mill Switzerland and Scotland in Group A. 7/1 with bet365 seems perfectly fair.

Next up, Spain are there to be shot at in Group B. Italy are second favourites, but Croatia (5/1 with bet365) have a habitat of turning up for these major tournaments, possess big game know-how and a squad littered with quality. They can edge a tricky section.

Portugal impressed in qualifying, but for better or worse, we don’t trust Martinez to get it right when it matters. One slip-up in the Group phase may be enough to see them play second fiddle to a talented and tenacious Turkey (4/1 with bet365) in Group F.

Belgium deserve to be favourites in Group E, but whether they should be as short as 2/5, we aren’t so sure. There isn’t much between Ukraine, Romania, and Slovakia, but no side will arrive with more fire in their bellies than the Ukrainians. Likely to receive plenty of support in all their games, they are technically excellent and have a nice mix of youth and experience in the squad. At 11/2 with bet365, Serhiy Rebrov's men represent decent value.
