Betting on Non-League Football
The Premier League and the other major European competitions, such as La Liga, Bundesliga, and Serie A, may dominate the scene when it comes to betting on football, but they are far from the only shows in town. The English topflight is only the peak of an extensive footballing pyramid, sitting above the Championship and Leagues 1 and 2, and it doesn’t end there. Moving further down the list, we find the land of Non-League football.
There are, in fact, around 20 rungs on the English football ladder, encompassing close to 500 individual leagues. Wherever you live in the country, the chances are high that you aren’t too far from a non-league football club.
The 21st century has witnessed a surge in popularity in the lower echelons of the game, with inspirational cup runs and increased promotion helping to increase attendance and interest in the grassroots game. Where there is interest in a sporting activity, betting is rarely too far away. Sure enough, many of the biggest established and new betting sites are increasingly beginning to offer odds on the non-league game.
Here, we look at the leagues most commonly priced up, the possible advantages of betting on the non-league game, and how the bookmakers are helping to grow this area of the sport.
Which Non-League Competitions Can You Bet On?
With so many leagues and teams featuring in the non-league system, the bookmakers can’t realistically be expected to offer odds on them all. However, whilst the Guildford and Woking Alliance League Division Four may be off-limits from a betting perspective, many betting sites consistently take bets on the top three tiers of the non-league system. The list below shows the leagues most commonly available and a selection of the bookmakers who regularly provide odds.
- National League - bet365, PaddyPower, William Hill, betfair, BetFred, QuinnBet, Midnite, Betway, BetGoodwin
- National League North - bet365, Sky Bet, Paddy Power, William Hill, 888sport, betfair, BetVictor, Coral, Ladbrokes, BetFred
- National League South - Sky Bet, Paddy Power, William Hill, 888sport, betfair, BetVictor, Unibet, Spreadex, Betfred, BetMGM
- Northern Premier League - William Hill, BetVictor, QuinnBet, BetGoodwin, PariMatch
- Southern Central League - Sky Bet, William Hill, 888sport, QuinnBet, BetGoodwin
- Southern League South - Sky Bet, William Hill, 888sport, QuinnBet, BetGoodwin
- Isthmian League - Sky Bet, Paddy Power, William Hill, 888sport, betfair, BetVictor, BetFred, LiveScoreBet, QuinnBet, Betway, BetGoodwin, PariMatch
Local Knowledge May Give You an Edge
Fans of the Premier League may turn their nose up at the thought of placing a bet on non-league action - but a winner is a winner no matter what the league, and there are reasons to believe that betting on non-league fixtures may provide a more realistic route to profit for football punters.
The reason for this is simply the availability of information. Given the huge popularity of the Premier League, bookmakers will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that their odds are accurate. Luckily for the odds compilers, this is relatively easy to do, as information regarding injuries, unrest in the camp, current form, etc., is readily and easily accessible via the comprehensive news coverage and the fact that so many games are televised.
Attempting to provide equally accurate odds for the non-league action is a far more difficult task. Professional as they are, bookmakers are only human and, therefore, limited in their resources. The vast majority of firms do not have the time to keep up to date with the latest injury news at Folkestone Invicta FC and will likely be unaware that Potters Bar FC have been playing out of their skins of late but have been on the wrong end of bad luck and several dubious refereeing decisions. Given these difficulties, many firms may copy the odds of their rivals or use a fixed algorithm to compute the prices.
In contrast, we punters are perfectly able to dedicate as much time as we like to researching one or more non-league sides to uncover a good value bet. A quick Google search will yield a whole host of non-league dedicated sites and forums, which often yield useful injury or current form issues, which may help tilt the odds in your favour.
Local knowledge can also be a huge edge in this niche area of the game. Perhaps you regularly attend the fixtures of your local non-league side, or even reading the sports section of the local paper may place you at an information advantage over the bookmakers. For example, if you find out that the local side is in the midst of an injury crisis before the bookmakers do, you immediately have an edge and should bet accordingly.
Be Realistic with Your Bets
Bookmakers didn’t get to where they are without being aware of the above. Whilst many firms are happy to provide odds on non-league football, most will have significantly lower maximum stakes to protect themselves on a market, which isn’t priced as accurately as the latest Premier League fixture. Wading in with an abnormally large bet, in comparison to your usual stake, will set alarm bells ringing.
If you believe you have an edge on the non-league game, the best advice is to keep your bets below the maximum stake threshold and in line with your usual punting activity. And don’t neglect accumulator bets whenever one or more teams take your fancy. Such bets generally won't require as large a stake to produce a decent win and are more likely to slip under the radar.
Betting Industry Supporting Grassroots Football
The relationship between football and the betting industry is a thorny issue, with many complaining that many Premier League clubs now have an official betting partner, or the name of a betting company plastered all over their shirts and stadiums. However, it’s possibly unfair to criticize companies for advertising to their core fan base – everybody does it – and it shouldn’t be forgotten that many betting companies do a lot of good for the game.
For Premier League sides, the support of a betting partner is a nice bonus but hardly critical to the club's survival. In contrast, Non-league outfits often rely on the support of sponsors to remain in business. No betting company could realistically expect to achieve a huge profit by sponsoring a non-league side - given the often small fan bases - but that doesn’t stop such companies from doing so to grow and support the game.
Unibet and 32Red are amongst those to have acted as official betting partners to the National League - committing to a dedicated effort to promote responsible gambling as part of the deal - whilst, more recently, RhinoBet became the official East Stand partner of National League side Dartford FC. With many clubs often reliant on local pubs and businesses for sponsorship, it is encouraging to see some of the bigger names stepping in to support the sport which provides so much of their business.
