World Cup Group D Preview
Group D in Russia looks sure to be one of the most interesting groups we have. Argentina are the main team in the group, and favourites to qualify from it. However, behind them any of the other three teams could qualify, and there is also something else to throw into the mix here. Argentina were very disappointing during qualifying, and needed their final game to make sure. Could they disappoint again, and will they get away with it this summer?
There is no doubt that on paper Argentina have one of the strongest teams in the tournament, but their qualifying campaign left a lot to be desired. They struggled against many teams, and needed a victory on the final day of qualifying to book their plane to Russia. They cannot afford to play like that when at the tournament, and will have to find a way to come together. Do that and they have a chance to win the whole thing, but fail to do so and we could be seeing a huge shock in Group D.
Croatia are the second favourites to qualify behind Argentina here, and will be most people’s idea of the team to go through with them. They are very experienced and often show up well at major tournaments so it should be no surprise to see them well fancied. They are not the best defensively, but have enough attacking talent to see them through the group stages, with the chance of going even further, although the possibility of playing France in the last 16 could stop that.
After a very good showing at Euro 2016, many people think Iceland can do something in this group, but I struggle to agree. Teams will be better prepared when facing them this time around, and they look to be the weakest team in the group, assuming there are no upsets. I am confident they will struggle here, and look the most likely to finish bottom.
Nigeria have a lot of European based players in their line-up which is only going to help them. They may struggle for quality against Argentina and Croatia, but with an attacking style of play, they certainly look capable of beating Iceland who are known to be quite a defensive team. While Nigeria don’t look the type to go on and progress here unless something happens to Argentina, they can beat Iceland who many people favour over them going into the tournament.
Group D Bet
Iceland look to be over rated by the bookmakers after their surprising Euro 2016 run, that will come to an end here and they will finish bottom of the group.
