Portugal v Spain - World Cup Match Preview
Portugal vs Spain – Group B
Portugal and Spain look likely to battle it out for top spot in Group B, and they face each other in what will be their first game of the tournament. To make things even more interesting, in a surprising move Spain have sacked their head coach right on the eve of the World Cup after agreeing to become the boss of Real Madrid. Sporting Director Fernando Hierro will take charge of the team during the World Cup, but this is a huge move to make, and could be potentially damaging for the Spaniards.
Portugal come here as reigning European champions, although they won just one game (inside 90 minutes) at Euro 2016 in what was a bizarre tournament for them. That victory will put additional focus and pressure on them here, but I can’t see them living up to that. On paper they are probably the 5th or 6th best European team, and I can see Spain breaking them down and turning them over in this one, which should give Spain the upper hand when it comes to winning Group B.
The focus on this game will all be on Spain to see how they play after their coach was sacked. Do they play and win, as if nothing has happened, or do they look uneasy and struggle because events have clearly affected them? Whatever the case may be, we will learn a lot more about Spain after this first game, which makes it even more interesting. Spain have the talent to win the game, but do they have the mental strength to do so after seeing their manager be sacked?
